Zelenka woke up to a harsh noise.

The aqua blob peeked out from her resting place in Veta lake and immediately saw what was causing the commotion. A gaggle of honks were running down the dirt path while carrying various items. Two humans soon followed, yelling harshly at the disruptive honks.

Zelenka sighed. For the last several months these honks had been running around and constantly causing trouble for the peaceful citizens of Veta Lake. The mischievous goose minions had snatched countless items from people when they weren’t paying attention and played pranks on those who went fishing on the lake. The honks would either pull on fishing lines to trick fishermen into thinking they got a bite or surprise them with loud honking. Occasionally a fisherman would be so startled by the honks that they would fall into the lake.

Fantine was among those who had suffered the greatest amount of harassment from the honks. They eagerly gobbled up her pastries and would misplace the ingredients she needed for her baking projects. The poor baker was seriously considering making Subetans taking her baking lessons buy anything that could repel the honks if her students wished to make amends for damaging her pans as a result of a failed recipe. Sarah, the quest giver who helped new and poor Subetan earn sP, was also a favorite target of the honks. The honks would steal items and even scare people who were completing Sarah’s quests or buying items from her shop.

Zelenka herself had been unfortunate to cross the path of the rambunctious honks. Like the fishermen, the blob had fallen victim to the clamorous cries of the honks while relaxing in the lake. Not to mention that a couple of times a honk had tried to shove its beak into Zelenka’s liquid body. Presumably, the honk wished to obtain water to clean its feathers but it was extremely disturbing to Zelenka nevertheless. The aqua blob usually managed to avoid the honks by getting in a bucket and disguising herself as ordinary water.

As the cries of the honks and villagers faded into the gentle Vetan breeze, Zelenka sunk back into the lake. As she did so, her cells merged with the glistening water, which resulted in the blob basically becoming unseen to the naked eye. In this state, Zelenka’s presence could only be detected if someone saw her open eyes gazing at the sky. The ability was something that Zelenka had been able to do ever since she was born.

The blob turned her gaze to the creatures that lived below the surface of the lake. The various fish were peacefully going about their day, completely unaware of the chaos that the honks were causing above the surface. Zelenka loved to be in a calm atmosphere like this, and she felt sorry for the kind citizens of Veta as they struggled to rectify the honk invasion. The aqua blob knew that something needed to be done to stop the honks once and for all.

One day Zelenka wandered into Esther’s shop. Esther also suffered the wrath of the honks frequently. The honks would often damage her floral arrangements and snatch her garden utensils when her back was turned. Emma, who lived with Esther, had grown to strongly dislike the honks. This dislike was due to the fact that the honks had knocked down a shelf, causing a bunch of gardening tools to fall right on top of Emma’s pet scootle! Fortunately, the scootle only sustained minor injuries. But Emma had never quite forgiven the honks for that incident.

In Esther’s shop, Zelenka looked around for some water so she could grow larger. During this search, however, Esther came in and noticed the blob. Surprised but also slightly amused to see such a creature in her store, the gardener picked up Zelenka and took her to the backyard. In the backyard Emma was giving the storm bringer Tempest some affection via brushing the creature’s fur. Emma’s scootle was sound asleep on her shoulder. Zelenka had never met Tempest and was uncertain at first, but the two creatures ended up bonding rather quickly. This new friendship provided Zelenka with enough water to grow larger over the next few days.

One day a blacklight cybill was gathering produce at the local Vetan farm with the burreros. Assisting the cybill were several minions: a lil’ kitchen mouse, a helpful radish bear, a helpful honey bear, a kitchen mouse and a helpful sewing bear. The cybill and her minions were collecting several crates of produce to give to Charity, the chef at the Free Food center. Just as the little minions were filling up the second last crate of required produce, the honks attacked. Most of the honks ran through the fields, honking loudly and scaring the burreros. One honk, however, chose to run straight towards the bears and mice filling up the crate. It frightened the minions away with a loud honk and started rustling its beak through the produce in the crate. The burreros attempted to fight back by lowering their heads and charging at the honks. This idea was only marginally successful as the honks jumped onto nearby chairs and tables to avoid the charging burreros. The honks managed to get away with some produce and garden tools in their possession. The blacklight cybill was very distraught and ended up spreading the words about what had happened with the honks. This recent attack convinced the citizens of Veta that they needed to team up to stop the honks.

Things came to a head when the honks once again attacked Esther’s shop and ran off with some of her wares. This time, Esther, Emma and Wesley chased the honks until they came across a glade lasarius who was honing her magical abilities. One honk ended up grabbing the lasarius’s bag, which was filled with potions. In the confusion, the honk threw the potion-filled bag. The potions flew out of the bag mid-air and crashed onto the lasarius’s pet, a Red Aeanoid Sproutling. Exposure to the potions caused the plant to grow and mutate rapidly, transforming it into a smaller version of the Red Diablonoid!

The little Red Diablonoid began to rampage, breathing fire and emitting spores that could knock a pet unconscious. Naturally, everyone, even the honks, were terrified by such a sight. Emma and Esther ran off to warn everyone about the new menace that had appeared while Wesley and the glade lasarius tried to tame the floral beast.

On Veta Lake, Zelenka overheard Emma and Esther’s shouts as the women warned Vetans of the mutant plant on a rampage. The aqua blob knew her time had come and began absorbing the lake water into her body, shapeshifting her form as she amassed more and more liquid. Several Vetans noticed a giant pillar rise from the lake and gasped. Esther and Emma turned around and saw a large beast rise from the depths of the lake. The image of the beast appeared to be that of the famous monster that was said to live beneath the lake’s waters. People screamed and ran in terror, but this aquatic beast meant no harm. It crawled out from the lake and went towards where the Red Diablonoid had last been spotted.

The little Red Diablonoid had managed to torch several plants and set some unfortunate pets on fire with its breath as it moved along the path. The watery “lake monster” of Veta finally spotted the little Red Diablonoid roaring at a group of pets. Undeterred by the red monster’s intimidating presence, the lake monster reared up and spit a large volume of water at the little Red Diablonoid. Startled, the red monster turned and engaged in battle with the lake monster. The mutant plant’s fiery breath evaporated once it hit the lake monster’s watery body. The lake monster let loose another blast of water, this time aiming towards the eyes of the red beast's original head. It turns out that one of the potions that had spilled on the Red Aeanoid Sproutling was a spell that made someone more aggressive, and the antidote was spraying water into the affected one’s eyes. The red beast soon calmed down and began observing its surroundings with a clear head.

The locals had managed to gather various strong pets to battle the two monsters, but when they arrived at the scene of the battle they were met with a pleasant surprise. The Red Diablonoid clearly was no longer hostile, only making a slightly confused noise at the Vetans. The lake monster began to shrink due to having used up much of the water it had acquired in fighting the mutant plant. Eventually the “lake monster” took on a more recognizable form: Zelenka! The aqua blob had originally planned to take the form of the lake monster to scare the honks away, but chose to hold off the Red Diablonoid from causing damage to the town. Thanks to the eyewitness accounts of the group of pets she had protected from the red beast, Zelenka was hailed as a hero.

Wesley and the glade lasarius were found unconscious on the road several feet away, knocked out due to inhaling some of the spores. The Vetans also found the honks lying unconscious in the field where the Red Diablonoid incident first began. Everyone was taken to the proper medical authorities and thankfully recovered with little incident. After the honks were medically cleared to leave the hospital, they were caged and put in the custody of Wesley and his family. Each of Wesley’s daughters would watch the honks to prevent them from causing any more mischief. Eventually each honk was given away to a Subetan who would give them the proper discipline and training.

Now that the honks were gone, life at Veta Lake returned to its peaceful state. Zelenka continued to wade in the cool and calm lake waters, but now she would occasionally get treats from Esther, Emma, and Sarah as thanks for helping Veta.
