"I don't see why you're so worked up over this, Nate. Our family has been mana-less for generations and we've been fine!"

Cornelius stood behind his brother, Nathan, who was hunched over a balcony that overlooked their family's fields. He had been sulking out here alone as he had come to do more often recently. Cornelius would come out here to console him for whatever he may be sad about. But this time Nathan responded differently. Almost as if he were crazed. Still, Cornelius was his brother and he refused to let him sink into insanity.

Nathan whipped around and met Cornelius' gaze. His eyes were bloodshot and he trembled when he left the stability of the railing.

"Are you... okay?" Cornelius asked.

"Our blood is weak, Cornelius," his brother snarled. "Look around you! Around us! People have great power and what do we have? Money? Money cannot buy us power!"

"But we have mother and father! We have a family who cares for us. And besides, you can borrow some of that power you seek using the mana supplements!"

Nathan staggered toward him unevenly. He moved as if he were a zombie.

"Why do you think I look like this?" Nathan demanded. "I have consumed and consumed, but it cannot sate my need for power!"

His brother stepped back. "How--how long have you been taking them?"

"Months, Cornelius... months! But they could offer me nothing!"

"I don't understand! Mana supplements work well!"

"Not well enough." Nathan's skin started to flake off. His eyes twitched as he continued toward Cornelius. He started to drag his left foot behind him, his movements jagged. "But I found someone who could give me what I wanted. What you should have wanted."

Cornelius continued to back away toward the French doors. "N-Nathan--what have you done?!"

Nathan stopped, black smoke pouring from his body. He cackled into the air before he dropped to the ground. His body dissolved right before Cornelius' eyes. There was nothing left when the smoke cleared.

Tears welled in Cornelius' eyes. What had happened to his brother? Who had offered him such power?

A voice then echoed around him.

"Dear brother... I need time to recover. Time to discover myself and the power I harness. But know that I will be back. And if your weak views have not changed by that time, I shall consume you."
