It's that beautiful time of year once again. The swirling winds bringing along the scent of frosted pine needles, the bright, white snow freshly crunching under your feet and decorating the trees and rooftops. Everyone setting up their shimmering lights, hoisting their Luminaire trees upright for covering in ornaments, and the sweet smells of cookies and pies and delectable roast Malarchy. The wondrous thoughts of what gifts to give and what you might receive.
Off in the woods though, a mystery dwells as strands of lights and lovingly crafted ornaments seem to appear from nowhere. More and more, day after day till the forest is completely illuminated with Luminaire delight. Many spend more time admiring and adoring the display than wondering "who could've managed all of this?"
Unbeknownst to the onlookers, a bright Telenine bristling with small pine plants along his spine tiptoes off to complete more ornaments of seashells, berries, and dropped Mahar jewels to leave on doorsteps.
Pine Needle, as he has dubbed himself, has dedicated himself and his well-practiced skills to spreading Luminaire cheer and kindness in secret. He started with little pine cones that he covered with multi-colored berries and flower petals, over time venturing out and finding seashells along the beach. He soon added lost jewelry and dropped Mahar gemstones to his pinecones, getting a bit better with every covered cone he created. With time he made too many, having accumulated more than he gave out as gifts. It wasn't very easy when many strangers he tries to greet become startled and run away, leaving him to set it on a tree to keep it from getting stepped on or kicked around. Once one tree was covered he moved onto the next, slowly catching on that they made good ornaments. So he kept going, covering the next tree, and the next, and more. He had about 20 trees adorned in berrys, seashells, and honey coated pine cones once he finished, tired and cold from the falling snow.
Not long after he went off to his hollow tree trunk to slumber in warmth, unaware of the small group of hikers in awe of the mysterious decorated trees. "Where'd all these come from?" "Let's go back into town and get lights! I think it'll make it look way neat!" "We still don't know who did this though?" "Who cares, we'll find out later. Let's go!"
It was pretty early in the morning, maybe 3:40 am, when Pine Needle woke up. Stretching as he stepped out of his tree, he prepared to go searching for more pine cones to decorate. Only a few meters away he spotted a faint, colorful glow. He stepped out into the wide circle of 20 or so tree and simply stared, astonished. In his slumber a guest had come and strung dozens of strings of colorful, flickering lights. With a wide smile he yipped and barked and bounced around, overjoyed that a stranger would leave him such a fantastic and wondrous gift.
As that Luminaire came to an end the group returned to the forest to retrieve their lights, only to find another surprise awaiting. In the center of the tree circle sat one decorated pine cone with a pawprint in the snow beside it. Sprawled out beneath was a roughly coherent "thank you" and smiley face.
