She hadn’t always looked like this.
When she’d arrived in Darkside, it was on paws dusted with twilight. She was tired, hungry, and alone, having walked from the forests north of Shadowglen.
Bad things had been happening in Shadowglen. Cut off from the boats leaving for the Sacred Lands, the demi had instead chosen to flee west. She wasn’t very fast, or clever, but she was determined, and as the forest faded into volcanic wasteland, her terror began to ease.
She just had to make it to the city. Even if she couldn’t find a job, she would be able to scrounge from the city’s leftovers.
As long as the horrors of the forest were left behind, she’d find a way to survive.
“Wormwood,” the goddess boomed. “And a handful of desert sand. Bring me these items and I may just spare your life.”
“Y-yes, of course,” she whimpered, and rushed from the castle as fast as her paws could carry her. When she’d asked about odd jobs in the city, nobody had warned her about Maleria’s sheer presence.
She almost didn’t go back. But she got lucky, foraging for some mushrooms and then trading them to a merchant for the ingredients Maleria had demanded. She made her way back to the citadel, panting for breath as she stepped over the threshold.
“You took your time, mortal,” Maleria sneered. But she threw a pouch of coins to the grey-furred demi anyway. She grabbed it in her mouth and fled.
It wasn’t an insignificant amount of SP, at least for a homeless demi who’d fled through haunted forests and left everything she’d owned behind. She used some of it to buy a warm meal, and a little more for a room in a dinky inn behind the lab. She collapsed into the tattered bed the moment she was finished with her stew, the exhaustion of her long journey finally overcoming her. Her dreams were uneasy, but she didn’t stir until the sun was high in the sky.
She returned to the citadel the next day.
“Unicorn hair, cinnamon incense... And a bloodred hunting knife. Bring me these items if you don’t wish to earn my ire!”
The knife was the easiest to find; a weapons merchant had set up shop in the same market she’d bought food in the night before. Almost every store in Darkside carried incense. The unicorn hair took some time, though, being available only in a dinky little alchemy store hidden on the far outskirts of the town. The demi spent almost all of her money on it, and raced back to the citadel.
“Always so slow,” Maleria grumbled, even as she tossed another pouch of coins to the demi. This one was much larger than the last. “I don’t know why I continue to rely on the assistance of mortals.”
The demi took her prize with a whispered thank you, and hurried back into the town proper.
Time passed. The demi occupied herself running errands for the Dark Goddess. Her grey coat began to darken, and little globs of dark matter began to swirl around her as she padded through the blasted wasteland of Darkside.
Soon she stopped returning to the city altogether, finding a place to sleep within the citadel itself. She was hardly the only one; dozens of pets tainted by the dark matter dwelt in the goddess’ home. She made friends with a few of them-- a kerubi who’d been there a little longer than she had, a quiet but patient tigrean, a mischievous little jollin. Sometimes they would run errands for Maleria, either together or apart, then play with each other in the grounds.
As the demi fell into a comfortable routine, her memories of her life in Shadowglen began to fade. Maleria could be harsh and imposing, but she played by certain rules, and if you followed those rules she could be almost appreciative.
The demi didn’t know what the goddess needed all those spell ingredients or weapons for. It didn’t really matter. She had a full belly, a safe place to sleep, and companionship. She was happy.
One day, the demi was sleeping by the big fire in the room that roughly filled the place of a den. She stirred as she sensed a familiar presence-- Maleria, drifting lazily through on her way to whatever unknowable task she had planned for the day. The demi sighed, but expecting the goddess to move on as usual, simply resumed her nap plans. Maleria actually stopped by her side, however, bending down to run one sharp claw ever so gently along the demi’s head.
“Strange,” the goddess murmured, but she didn’t explain what she found so strange.
The demi didn’t move, still soaking up the warmth of the hearth on the plush fur rug. She was deeply content. Her days living in fear in the forest were little more than a distant memory. Maleria’s words were harsh, but her moods were predictable, and she was surprisingly tolerant of the dark matter infested creatures that moved into the citadel as their coats darkened and began to glow.
Around her, the darkmatter that had become attracted to her onyx fur was beginning to form into odd clumps.
Her aura changed first.
It went from a cool purple, to a warmer purple, to magenta, to a pale pink. Sometimes it would almost glitter as it fragmented and reformed around her dark matter companions.
She didn’t start paying attention until she noticed her paws lightening again.
The deep blacks faded, becoming grey, then an odd ashy-fawn colour... And ever so slowly, pinks and reds began to bleed through.
Dark matter was a corruption; but somehow the demi had corrupted it in turn. Her happy, contented feelings, the quiet but no less intense love she felt for her new home and family, had caused the dark matter to mutate. It was a deep pink now, and explicitly heart-shaped-- much like the markings forming in red on her now pink coat.
She smiled more now. She drifted through the citadel like the rest of the pets, only her bizarre colouring distinguishing her from them. It didn’t seem infectious, although her aura no longer mingled with that of her dark matter friends. They didn’t seem to mind. The kerubi still slept wrapped around her, the tigrean still groomed her, and the jollin still brought her trinkets he’d stolen in the city below. Maleria still bossed her around, but seemed willing to allow her bizarre mutation to exist within her walls.
There was something of a quiet joy in her existence now.
Love Matter is only formed in the hearts of people who are truly and deeply in love. Sadly, it seems to be rare in this day and age...
