The lake looked like glass for how still it was, disturbed only by the lone duck who lived nearby swimming serenely. A thick mist covered the area making it impossible to see from one side of the lake to the other. A death-like stillness surrounded the area. Basking in the stillness was a lone woman; the feeling welcoming instead of unsettling. Adjusting her dress as she sat upon a tree stump, the woman lifted a carved wooden flute to her lips and blew gently into it. A note sweet as sugar danced out the end of her instrument and a smile graced her lips as the melody began to wrap around her.

So engulfed in her concert for one, the performer didn't notice a new arrival. Fitted with a thick satchel on one hip, and a box under the opposite arm a man strode thru the thick fog with the surety of someone who'd walked this path a thousand times. As he approached the area the concert was taking place, he stopped a few steps from the stump and placed the box carefully on the ground. Reaching into his bag, he pulled out a blanket and laid it upon the wet grass before taking a seat. He pulled a notebook and pen out of the bag as well before looking up towards the direction the music was coming from.

"Hello again." his voice rang out into the fog, and abruptly the music stopped, "I told you I'd be back. Forgive me for taking so long."

The woman glared in his direction, though he couldn't see her. How dare he interrupt her practice again! For some weeks now, the man – Damien she remembers him once introducing himself as – had begun coming and asking her silly questions when all she wanted to do was be left alone. As if to annoy her, he opened up the box he'd brought along and took out the weird board with the letters on it. She tried to remember the name of it (Luigi board? Squeegee board?) but the correct name always escaped her.

"Are you here? I heard your music." came Damien's voice, rudely breaking her out of her thoughts. Perhaps it was childish, but she wanted nothing more than to pitch the little triangular piece right at his fat nose. So she did. (If she enjoyed the little startle it gave the man, well that's her secret.) "Ah. As welcoming as always." he laughed as he rubbed his face – much to her annoyance.

The piece clacked angrily on the board: G O A W A Y

"Now now. Let's be pleasant. I only wish to talk. You're the least violent ghost I've met in the profession." The triangle flew into his nose again as if to contradict this statement, "Most of the time, then."

I A M P R A C T I C I N G

"Yes. I heard and you've gotten better. Have you figured out what you're practicing for?" The triangle moved to the ‘No’ at the bottom of the board causing Damien to frown, "Do you remember anything else?"

The piece didn't move.

The man sighed and opened his notebook. He'd originally been paid to investigate this lake after the new owners of the large estate it was on stated they sometimes heard 'Haunting cries' coming from nearby. He'd been a paranormal investigator for years and had dealt with his fair share of spooks and spector's but nothing prepared him for what he found. The 'cries' turned out to be a flute, and the 'haunting' aspect was simply that the ghost playing it wasn't very good. Otherwise she never left from this spot, never bothered anyone, and simply wanted to play in solitude. He'd managed to convince the owners they had nothing to worry about, but his interest was peeked.

Unfortunately though, hers wasn't. She had opted to simply ignore him at first, then taking to throwing some of his things in the lake (he's learned to leave his phone in the car now), before finally striking gold with the Ouija board. Only to learn she remembered nothing, not even her name. That bothered him more than anything.

"I really want to call you something other than flute playing ghost in my notes. Do you have a name you like?"

L E A V E

"Oh come now. Perhaps...Melody? Song? Harmony maybe?"

Y O U A R E D U L L

That startled a laugh out of Damien. The woman threw the triangle at him again and let out her own ghostly giggles when he jumped like a cat at the sudden attack. "Oh you terrible thing! If I wasn't worried about my things ending up going for a swim again, I'd leave the Ouija board home to avoid the abuse!" Damien snickered. Nothing happened for a moment, and then the triangle returned to the board and begun moving.

O U I J I

"Wha- no. Ouija. O, u, i, j, a. You spelled it incorrect."

N O O U I J I

"That is incorrect still."

I A M O U I J I

And as the piece stopped moving, Damien stared. I am Ouiji? Was that...what she wanted to be called?

"Is that...what I'm to call you from now on?" he asked. Almost immediately the triangle moved to 'Yes'. "Well...if you insist my dear. Ouiji it is."

G O O D N O W L E A V E

Damien smiled and shook his head gently. A new name would change nothing about his favorite little ghoul it seemed. "I get it. I get it. Enough questions for today, though humor me with but one more?" Nothing happened for a moment, and Damien feared he'd actually managed to upset her before the piece slowly slid to 'Yes'. "May I stay for the performance? I was being honest when I said you'd gotten much better." he said as he put the notebook away.

J U S T T H I S O N C E

Came Ouiji's reply after a moment. Damien smiled and lied back on the blanket, closed his eyes and sighed happily as the music hesitantly started up again. This time just a little bit closer than before.

And so time passed slowly by the lake, at the concert meant for two.
