The 1912 Encounter:
On the night of August 9, 1912, George Haviland Barron (curator of the Golden Gate Park Museum) reported seeing a large black horse galloping at full speed near South Drive, ridden by a terrified young woman wearing a straw hat.
Park Police investigations and historical accounts linked the vision to a recurring local story from the 1880s about an intoxicated young woman who seized a police officer's mount and galloped toward the western edge of the park. According to the lore, the woman and the horse plunged or rode into the heavy surf at Ocean Beach and drowned.
Legend holds that the phantom duo re-emerges once a year to retrace their frantic westward dash through the park toward the ocean.
