Tengiz was a hydrus mallarchy who lived in a lovely medium-sized town next to the ocean. The town was home to a royal family that was well-liked by the populace. The royal family had a young malticorn prince that was very attractive. Many young women dreamed of a chance of meeting the handsome prince and always grew excited whenever a public event that involved the royal family was announced. It was at one of these events that Tengiz had a chance encounter…..

I had first seen her dance 8 months ago. The prince of the land was throwing a ball in remembrance of an ancient war. As part of the celebration, several maidens performed a dance in front of the court. They all gracefully glided across the ballroom floor in synchronization. Then each dancer stepped out on her own to perform a solo dance. She was the fifth dancer to step out, but she was the most graceful dancer in the court. All were mesmerized by her elegant moves….

I saw her again two months later. It was during the annual caffeii chase, when groups of caffeii were set loose on the wide grassy fields for pets to chase. Whoever managed to catch and calm down the most caffeii was declared the winner. It was my first time participating in this event, and I was having quite a bit of trouble trying to keep my grip on a caffeeii that I had found bouncing around in some brush. Suddenly, I got hit in the face by another energetic caffeii. The impact knocked me to the ground and made me lose my grip on the caffeii I had caught. The coffeeii took advantage of the opportunity to spring away from me as fast as it could. It turns out that Cordelia had been chasing the caffeeii that hit me in the head. She ended getting tripped up by the caffeeii that I’d been holding and fell to the ground. I got up, my head spinning from the impact, and I saw Cordelia. I walked over to her, and I happened to see something very concerning.

Her feet were bleeding…

I got Cordelia on her feet and together we walked towards one of the medical tents that had been set up for the event. The nurse, an angel telenine, examined Cordelia and declared that she could no longer participate in the chase and needed to rest in order for her feet to recover properly. The nurse was also kind enough to examine me. She said I’d be fine from the injury and could stay in the chase. However, I chose to take Cordelia back to the castle, which was the starting point of the event. Cordelia, who was a glade torrey, was silent throughout the whole incident. Back at the castle, I began to press Cordelia on why her feet were bleeding, but she continued to be silent….

A couple of weeks later, Tengiz learned that Cordelia was mute. Her condition had been discovered as soon as she had arrived in the kingdom. This information raised Tengiz’s concerns even higher because Cordelia was potentially suffering from injured feet in silence….

According to town gossip, Cordelia’s very arrival in the kingdom was strange. Some local maidens had found Cordelia on the ocean shores. According to them, Cordelia was visibly struggling. The glade torrey could barely walk on her legs back then. The maidens supported Cordelia until they found some of the prince’s soldiers. The soldiers then took Cordelia to the palace, where the royal family was informed of what had transpired. The prince was reportedly greatly taken by Cordelia’s beauty and had her put under his personal care.

One night Tengiz saw Cordelia standing on the edge of the beach. She stepped forward into the ocean, letting the water wash over her feet. To the mallarchy’s surprise, he saw five torrents emerge from the water and engage in conversation with Cordelia. Tengiz couldn’t understand what was being said, but it was clear that Cordelia knew the torrents somewhat well.

Tengiz and Cordelia crossed paths once again at the local florist shop and forged a friendship over the next couple of months. One day, while the prince was away on a long journey, Tengiz asked Cordelia about her home and family. Cordelia looked away, clearly unsure about whether to answer. A few days later the glade torrey handed Tengiz a notebook containing a written account of her life….

I was born a torrent and lived under the sea with my family. One day we went on a trip to the surface with my aunt. During this trip we discovered that a festival was taking place on the beach. That festival is where I first saw the prince. I was taken aback by how handsome he was, and the memory of him lingered long after we returned to the ocean.

My family soon realized that I had developed a crush on the prince. Most of them felt that it was unfeasible for a land creature and an aquatic creature to sustain a strong romantic relationship. They felt that I’d be better off with a creature that could breathe underwater for extended periods of time. Despite these words of caution, I was determined to meet the prince again. So I went to a sea witch that was rumored to live within a dark trench many miles away from my hometown…..

Tengiz was stunned after reading those last few words. He knew from personal experience that asking for favors from a sea witch could have unwanted consequences. He had once stumbled across the famed sea witch Merana while traveling. The sea witch had promised great power for Tengiz in return for helping her. Tengiz eagerly did what Merana requested, dreaming of obtaining mystical powers. However, Merana’s promises amounted to nothing. Tengiz was transformed into a hydrus pet with no magical power. His only new abilities were the capability of breathing underwater and increased swimming speed.

The mallarchy continued to read the notes. They revealed that Cordelia had given up her voice in exchange for a spell that would turn her into a land creature. Unfortunately, the spell had a dark side effect. When Cordelia used her legs, she felt the sensation of sharp glass puncturing her feet. If the glade torrey spent too much time walking on her legs without resting them, her feet would start to bleed. But the deal with the sea witch had another clause that was even worse than the cursed, bleeding feet. The sea witch had warned Cordelia that she would only remain a land creature if she married the prince she had a crush on. If the prince married someone else, the torrey would be transformed into seaweed at sunrise on the day after his wedding.

Tengiz was horrified. The mallarchy couldn’t believe that his friend had made such a desperate and reckless decision. There was no guarantee that the prince would marry Cordelia.

“Does the prince know….about all of this?” Tengiz asked, fear and concern interwoven within his voice.

Cordelia shook her head.

“He needs to be told about this,” Tengiz insisted. “Why did you write this for me and not for him?”

The glade torrey hung her head, slightly ashamed.

When the prince returned from his trip, he had a new companion with him: a beautiful female angel keeto. The angel keeto had a beautiful voice that captivated the hearts of anyone who heard her sing. Many of the townspeople noticed that the prince and the keeto were spending lots of time together. Excitement was buzzing throughout the seaside town, for many theorized that the malticorn and keeto might be dating and that a royal wedding would eventually occur.

Naturally, these rumours raised alarm bells for both Tengiz and Cordelia.

Tengiz insisted to the torrey that letting the prince know about her dark deal with the sea witch was even more of a necessity now. Even so, in the depths of his mind the hydrus mallarchy knew that alerting the prince to what was going on still might not guarantee that Cordelia’s life would be saved. So Tengiz wrote a message for Cordelia’s family and gave it to his pet meeris named Aqua Heart. The hydrus mallarchy had inferred that Cordelia’s family visited her at night because they didn’t want to be seen, so sending a message through an aquatic minion was the best way to get in contact with them.

A couple of days later Aqua Heart returned to Tengiz with a message:

Many thanks for your concern about our sister. We have known about Cordelia’s choice to live on the land for a while now, but we did not expect how high of a price she had to pay for such an opportunity. We will go to the sea witch to find if there’s a escape clause for her deal with our sister.

Two weeks later, Tengiz had finally convinced Cordelia to write a letter explaining her predicament to the prince. The mallarchy had also begun to study myths and legends about sea witches in order to find a way to defeat them.
