every night the sun died so the moon could breathe.

Long ago, there was only the light of the sun.
The other stars and bodies of the galaxy were swept up in her brilliant light. They watched from a distance as she smiled and only Venus and Mercury stayed close to her side. Their dark skin glowed under the light that spilled from her flesh, leaning forward to whisper in her ear. Year after year when the spacial bodies came together he would stand near the side and observe. While other planets, stars, and comets had some light to their name, he was merely a moon. He did nothing but follow around the body that mostly caught his eye. Earth was his companion, and a fine one she was, even though she may be a little too boastful at times. The competition between her and Venus was certainly entertaining. Sister planets was viewed more as an insult than a compliment now...
Every time he would find his gaze drawn back to the Sun. He observed her dance among the stars and eventually he noticed something.
Her light was dimming.
Her smile never faded but it no longer reached her eyes. Her skin was losing its luminescence and her hair no longer blazed as bright.
It took all the courage he possessed to finally approach her. Venus and Mercury's eyes cut into him like a blade, sneers on their faces. Mercury certainly held more protectiveness in his gaze than Venus's, her gaze as cold as the depths of space.

"May I have this dance, my Sun?" She blinked at him and he never noticed the brilliant orange of her eyes. They were like a tongue of flame. He offered his hand and she slowly reached out to take it.
"It would be my pleasure." He gave her a smile and ignored the looks of the others as he pulled her towards the middle of the floor. "You are the Earth's moon? Luna?"
"I am."
"You have an ulterior motive for bringing me here. I have seen you watch me from afar." He flushed under her observation yet she merely laughed, the sound like the crackling of a fire. "Did you think you were being covert? What do you wish of me?"
"I have noticed what you want to keep hidden."
"Oh?"
"Your light is fading," he whispered against her hair. The heat of it licked at his skin and he pulled away before the strands could burn him. There was a fear in her eyes he was quick to try and sooth. "You are doing too much. You are providing light to everyone."
"I am the brightest star in this system. What else do you propose I do?" He frowned and silence stretched between them as they danced.
"Share your light with the moons."
"What?" He tightened his grip on her hands to prevent her from jerking away.
"You are stretched too thin, but if you were to share your light with the moons, we can light the planets in your stead. It is unnecessary for them to be fully lit at all times. If you do this, I believe your light will return. I know I am more than happy to give you all of me if it will provide you the rest you deserve." Her eyes widened and he finally took notice that they had stopped in the middle of the room. The eyes of the others bore down on them, but he forced his gaze to never waver from the Sun's.
"You are a strange moon." He chuckled.
"So I've been told." Her lips curled into a smile, a genuine and bright smile that nearly took his breath away. He stiffened as heat crept across his skin and a collective gasp swept through the crowd.
"I will share my light with you. Reflect it onto the people of Earth and guide them in the dark when Earth turns her face from me."

The light of the sun glowed beneath his skin, nearly making his pale skin translucent. He followed her words and shone on Earth when the Sun was unable to and finally he found purpose in his life as a Moon. Yet as the season continued, he felt the warmth of the Sun's light fade from his body and exhaustion began to weigh more heavily on his limbs. The next dance he found the Sun making a beeline for him, her skirts billowing out behind her. Her skin was brighter and her hair blazed blue with the power of her light.
"Oh, my dear Luna," she cooed once she reached him. Her fingers grasped his face and pulled it up towards her to peer down at him. "You look exhausted. I noticed you were dimming in the sky."
"I always knew your job was hard, but I'm not sure I was prepared for the extent of it."
"You have done more than enough. Rest. The people of Earth will be able to function without either of us in the sky for a single night."
"But you will restore your light to me?" Her brow furrowed and he shook his head, lifting a hand to lightly grasp her wrist. "I am not asking to be greedy, but I can see how life has returned to you. I will bear whatever pain this brings to see you continue to thrive as you're doing now." Her gaze softened and her fingers caressed his face.
"Dear Luna, you are too kind to me."
"Calum," he whispered. "That is the name which is carved upon my heart that I will share with you." She stiffened yet he raised a hand when her mouth opened to respond. "I don't need yours in return. I merely wished to show you my true self since you have brought meaning to it." Her head tilted and she leaned close to press her lips to his cheek. The skin was immediately scorched, blistering under the intensity of her light. He knew it would scar the second her breath brushed his flesh, a mark he would gladly carry evermore as a badge of honor.
"Renae is the name which is inscribed upon my heart which I share with you," she whispered in his ear. He could feel the shell of his ear burn. She pulled back and smiled softly at him. Despite the crowd around them, all he could see was the brilliance of the Sun before him. He knew then that he would carry her burden for as long as she bid him to if only he could see the beautiful smile painted on her lips.
