Life Excerpt

He took a deep breath and let out a sigh of delight at the wonderful aroma that filled his nostrils. The sweet scent from the flowers that were growing nearby, and even the simple smell of the grass made him feel good about the world at this very moment. Ruhma smiled as he felt the warming rays of the sun heat up his light gray skin. He knew that he couldn’t sit in the same spot for too long though because it would make him feel like he was being cooked alive. He was wearing full plate armor, after all. Well, almost full anyway, as he was not wearing a helmet. He rarely did, outside of combat situations. He always felt like the helmet just limited his view, and thus his enjoyment, of the world around him.
Ruhma found himself so lost in his own thoughts that he didn’t even hear the footsteps as someone approached him where he sat on a bench in one of the parks that the magical city of Dalaran had to offer. Because he hadn’t heard them approach he almost jumped in surprise when the person started to speak to him.
”Excuse me, are you one of the...um...what was the term? Lightforged?” The voice was nice and melodic, but still managed to startle Ruhma. Even if just a little. He opened his eyes and saw a red haired blood elven male standing in front of him, wearing almost exclusively black, red and white colored clothes. Very tight fitted clothes, Ruhma thought. Definitely a spellcaster of some kind. He smiled at the elf.
”I am. Why do you ask?”
”Well, you’re simply the first one I’ve come across. I suppose most of your kind are out there.” He gestured in a wide arc to his side, as to show that he meant the world outside of the city they were in. “You know. Fighting the good fight, and all that.” Ruhma shrugged and chuckled lightly.
”I suppose they are. Although I happen to know that not all of them are.” The elf raised an eyebrow as if to question what he meant without actually uttering the words. Ruhma continued. “Well, not only am I here. But I also know that my sister, Thelle, is here in town as well.” The elf gave him a smile then, one that Ruhma wasn’t really sure how to interpret. There was an almost mischievous quality to it. Then his new acquaintance took a couple of steps and promptly sat down next to him on the bench. Very close to Ruhma, who instinctively started to move away so as to create more space between them but the elf made sure that they stayed at the same distance by moving along with Ruhma. Giving him an almost seductive look from the side the elf spoke again.
”I hope your sister’s okay with her brother…enjoying himself.” As he said that the elf leaned closer so that instead of the aroma of the flowers Ruhma’s nostrils were now filled with the scent from the elf. “I’m Zarzen, by the way. Zarzen Blacksorrow. And what might your name be, handsome?” Ruhma gave Zarzen an apologetic smile before replying.
”It’s a pleasure to meet you, Zarzen. My name is Ruhma.” Zarzen was about to say something but Ruhma made sure that it was clear that he had more to say. “I…Well, first off I am very flattered that you would be interested in someone like me. I am sure you could have your choice…of whoever you would want to go after in that way.”   ”Definitely.” Zarzen’s response practically oozed confidence as he said it. Ruhma smiled at him again and now the elf sighed. “But you’re not interested? You sure?” Ruhma chuckled.
”Yes, I am very sure. At another time in my life I might have taken you up on that offer but…now?” He made a hand gesture to indicate his body and the markings and plates that now adorned it and gave him more power from the Light. Zarzen sighed.
”Of course I had to go and flirt with the one paladin that takes his calling seriously.” The handsome elf slumped on the bench in defeat. Ruhma cocked his head to the side.
”Is it really that obvious that I’m a paladin?” Zarzen gave him a look of incredible disbelief.
”Eh, yeah. Your whole set of armor is basically a screaming pillar of holy light letting the world around you know how…” The elf made a nonchalant hand gesture in Ruhma’s general direction to indicate his whole being. “...extremely serious you are about the light. Which is pretty much just a paladin thing. I’ve never seen any priests be as zealous about it, personally.” Ruhma cleared his throat.
”I am. Serious about my dedication towards the Light, and the Naaru, I mean.” He looked at the elf, who looked very defeated right now. “Did me saying no to you really affect you this much? If you truly are spoiled for choice then surely one rejection isn’t the whole world?” Zarzen sighed and looked at him.
”It isn’t. But I’ve never been with a lightforged one before.” He winked at Ruhma. “I figured that maybe our opposing magics would provide some extra sparks to the whole event.”
”Opposing? Oh…so you are a warlock then?” Zarzen nodded.
They spent the next few hours talking. Ruhma found out that Zarzen didn’t have a lot of friends, both because he chose to be more of a loner to keep himself from getting hurt but also because people had a tendency to dislike warlocks before even giving them a chance. And it didn’t really help that Zarzen pretty much viewed his demons more as friends than just a means to an end like most warlocks did. Eventually Ruhma’s sister, Thelle, found them and they ended up having dinner at the Legerdemain Lounge that night. Zarzen’s friend, Keoraen, ended up joining them later in the evening as well.
