The name Michigan comes from the Ojibwe word mishigami, meaning 'large water' or 'large lake', which is quite appropriate, seeing as it has shoreline along four of the five great lakes - Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior - and Lake St. Clair! Because of the Great Lakes, Michigan has the longest freshwater shoreline of anywhere in the world.

Michigan is the only state that is made up of two peninsulas - the upper and lower. Some people call those in the upper peninsula 'Yoopers' and those in the lower peninsula 'Trolls' (because they live below the Mackinac Bridge). The Mackinac Bridge connects the upper and lower peninsulas.

The state is widely known as the automotive capital of the United States. It is home to three major auto manufacturers (Ford, General Motors, and Fiat Chrysler), all headquartered in metro Detroit.

Michigan is known as 'The Great Lakes State', 'The Wolverine State', 'The Mitten State' (because of how the lower peninsula is shaped like a mitten), "Water/Winter Wonderland", and more recently 'Pure Michigan'.

The state motto is Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam circumspice - If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you.

Michigan was admitted to the union of the United States on January 26th, 1837, as the 26th state.
