You simply can't wait to arrive. There are things troubling you that you'd be more than happy to forget for a while. I think you know just the things in question.
As you continue onwards, though, you realize you've been back this way already. This has never happened before. You've traveled this route each and every time. You don't remember making a wrong turn- you never make wrong turns, not in your desperation for retreat- and so you stop to listen carefully for the twilight birds, trying to get your head together, wondering if you should just call for a ride... it's getting close to sunset now.
Despite yourself, you take one more turn and find yourself in a patch of trees next to a tiny, old cemetery you've never seen before. Foreign flowers fill the dirt and twist through the thick roots springing up around your feet.
It's growing darker, but suddenly, you don't feel worried anymore. A carved path winds through the trees, looking to be so purposely patted down that you can't help but follow it. You know you'll never end up here on accident again. You can always call for a ride later on.
When the trees break open, you look up at the sky; deep orange and pink, striped with curled white clouds, defined enough to appear as it they float just feet above the earth. The flowers are replaced with carnations, shining in the sun's late glow.
They're your favorite flower. But they don't grow around here, and you know that for sure.
You reach down and run a finger down their petals. They stretch from the ground in the most romantic colors: red and white and pink, but you were taught never to pick a flower no matter how beautiful it is, so you stay crouched in their blanket of vibrancy, failing to remember when the air around you last felt so fresh and clean.
Your troubles melt away in an instant.
Just before you stand to leave, before the sun disappears over the horizon, you feel something soft land on your head.
A majestic creature towers over your form in the field, and though its skeletal appearance shouldn't put you at ease, it does. And it stares down at you, eyes sympathetic, back covered in a mountain of carnations. You see they've been woven together with hemp cord, and it's placed one of the crowns on your head.
It smiles. It's not good to stress. I do apologize for leading you out of your way, but at times, we need a brand new moment... a change of scenery to bring us back to life.
It strides away and looks back once, asking if you'll follow. You rise, slowly, reluctant to leave, but check-in is drawing very near and you don't want to be skipped over.
You follow the creature back to the cemetery's proper gated entrance, and when you emerge from the tangle of forest, you find Veta sitting quietly at the bottom of the hill, illuminated by streetlamps.
But when you turn to thank your guide, it is already gone.
Your room is neat and tidy when you arrive; the floral wallpaper brings you peace, and a warm bath is comforting to your aching bones after the journey here.
In the morning, the sun shines hot and bright. You come downstairs and enter the day, equipped with your beach tote and light summer wear.
You've already forgotten what you were so worried about before as you head down to the main street with a light step and a ring of carnations resting softly on your head.
