There had always been a black gum tree in the courtyard at the center of the library. A curious old tree- gnarly and thick, with roots that seemed to peek out of the ground all through the courtyard. But the strangest thing about the old tree was the leaves- no matter what the time of year, the tree always, always displayed it's crimson autumnal colors.
Messel and Xoco asked the resident ghost, Shinko, about the tree, and she always responded with a shrug. It had been there for as long as she had, at least. How long that was, exactly, the ghost wasn't sure, but she did know it was a very, very long time. She also admitted to feeling like the tree was important, but she couldn't really say why she felt that way.
As Xoco's power to see spirits and demons started to awaken, xe started to feel something from the tree. Something strange; xe said that xe felt two otherworldly presences within the tree, but couldn't identify them, and all of xyr attempts to reach out to the spirits were for naught. Whatever was there, xe could tell that it was too deeply asleep to reach.
It wasn't until the awakening of the Seven Deadly Sinners that the true nature of the tree would come to light. The tree, it turned out, was a prison. Something that radiated black magic- no one could tell exactly what it was- was released from the tree when the Sinners joined their power. It fled before any of the library residents could stop it. But the dark entity was not all that was released- the second presence within the tree was also awakened. Tupelo, the dryad spirit of the ancient gum tree, emerged from a long sleep within the wood.
She revealed to the confused residents of the library that she had been maintaining the seal on a great evil for two-hundred years; a seal that was now broken. She also revealed that she hadn't been holding the seal aloneā¦ Shinko, the amnesiac ghost of the library, had been the long ago mage who cast the spell that locked the entity within the tree. The spell had required the caster to sacrifice their life in the casting.
Lo, as the dryad invited the others to call her, could not venture far from her tree, and remained weak after her long sleep. But she promised to do everything she could to help the others understand their enemy, to protect the library, and to help the ghost remember her previous life.
