first impression.

of course, when you first meet eyes with the creature before you, you recoil.

it's dark. it wears a skull on its face.

the green on its fur looks like poison, warning perceptive prey of danger that hasn't yet been revealed.

yellow eyes pierce through you and you feel naked. you feel like a book being shred to pieces before the strictest critic.

you want to run away.

so you do.

second glance.

the next time you come across the creature, you feel something bubbling up through you, stealing your words away and leaving you staring like you were just gifted sight for the first time    —    curiosity

its hands are crossed—and you can only describe the action as delicate. elegant.

it holds itself like it is very aware of how much it weighs, how easily one wrong move could destroy the world around it

when your eyes meet this time, it looks away quickly, as if shy and all too aware that it was its gaze which made you flee the last time your paths crossed.

you wonder if it can blush, underneath that mask.

you think, abprubtly, of how absurd this is and you burst into laughter.

the creature looks anywhere but at you.

reality.

it is a creature of habit, having tea at precisely two in the afternoon each day, an assortment of stuffed animals and fluffy creatures posed around the table with porcelain, pink accented cups sitting before them.

you are joining them today, as you have, by now, many times before.

it no longer strikes you as odd or bizarre, when your cup is passed to you with clawed paws, nor do you even pause to think on the contrast.

you know now that it has a penchant for light colors, slow, peaceful days, and existing with as little as trouble as possible.

though it has power in every part of its body, and though it could easily be more of a monster than a creature, all of those things would disturb the perfectly average peace that it has made for itself.

yellow eyes graze over you kindly, waiting for your nod of approval that the tea is "just fine, thank you," before its attention is focused on one of the many other creatures taking part.

your visits here have taught you one thing:

monotony is not always bad.
                   and,
    to some,
"monotony" tastes a lot more like "happy."
