story

The city is much more alive at night than it was during the day. Most places would have traffic jams during rush hours during the day, but that isn't really an issue here. If anything, it is more difficult to get around at night if you were trying to drive around. Technology has evolved quite a bit the last few decades to the point it was a rarity to not see someone with some sort of device attached to their body. Body modifications have gained a new meaning compared to a hundred or so years ago; back then, body mods were more strictly used for aesthetic purposes, bragging rights, religious reasons, and so on. Nowadays, body modification usually means adding some sort of electronic device to your body. For example; some folks had the ability to scroll through the internet similar to a cell phone while using their own skin. They could bring up 3-D videos, images, or even just pages to be projected in front of them if they don't have anything to hide. Some other examples include swapping out perfectly good limbs for enhanced prosthetics to increase agility, strength, vision, and so on. Some went so far as to alter their own DNA to still remain mostly human, but have the appearance of another animal entirely, complete with all of the physical attributes of said animal. While most scoffed at the idea of this early on, it was slowly becoming a little more commonplace. However, it was generally the well-to-do folks who did this, as it was very costly and was something that would take 2-3 years to complete, minimum. There have been a couple of exceptions, however; a couple of times, a free option was offered to a very select few winners of a battle of wits, which included niche trivia, solving riddles, and following clues for a scavenger hunt. Not to brag or anything, but I sort of wiped the floor with those games. I'm a little too smart for my own good sometimes, but don't really have the motivation to do much with my life, y'know? I prefer a simple life; living in a small apartment, enjoying virtual reality while laying on my bed or couch, and eating good food. I do have a job at least, but it's kind of hit-or-miss. It pays well when I do have something to do, but sometimes I go can days with nothing to do. Then again, there are days where I don't even get a chance to eat because I'm so busy.

What's my job, you ask? Well, the easiest way to explain it is that I'm a courier. I responded to a job offer I got through an email. It looked like a scam and I was actually trying to mess with the person, but it turned out to be legit. I don't really know what it is I transport -- it's usually stuff I can just carry with me in a bag, parcel, or other form of small package, which is fine by me. I get around a lot more easily if I can just move around on foot. After my enhancements took place, I started noticing more and more changes to my physique. I got steadily more slim, fur grew pretty quickly, and I became a lot more quick and agile. I noticed that my ability to see at night or in the dark improved tremendously as well. Now, the tail part -- that was sort of awkward and tricky. They sort of made an... artificial tail, I guess? But it was just skin with no fur. So I had this naked tail trailing behind me that I was trying to learn how to control for about a week while the fur grew in. And let me tell you -- I bruised, cut, and otherwise hurt my tail numerous times in that first week. Once the fur grew in and I got more accustomed to how to use it for extra balance, it wasn't too bad, but that was the weirdest thing. Sorry, I'm sort of getting off topic here -- my job, right. My employer had me do a test run to see how quickly I could make a delivery and was very pleasantly surprised. The city has a ton of holograms, neon lights, and otherwise bright, flashing colors at night. Even usually dark alleyways are very rarely completely dark at night due to all of the color and shenanigans going on. My colors sort of help me blend in or at least not get noticed as easily when I'm trying to skulk around. My base fur color is dark enough and my markings are not exactly natural and sort of have a shine to them, but seeing flashes of blue through an alleyway or on a rooftop doesn't exactly stand out. I've never met my employer and have only ever referred to them as 'Boss,' as I don't even know what they identify as. They noticed I liked the challenge of getting to places in a timely manner, so every so often they'll tack on a bonus if I'm able to make a really strict deadline. The general gist of my job is to go to a drop location, pick up said package, and deliver it to another location or individual, usually by saying some sort of phrase or using a specific hand signal during the drop-off or trade-off. I never ask about what I deliver. I get paid pretty good for these deliveries and I'm not about to mess this up by beginning to ask questions.

What's that? You said you heard me say I get paid well when I do get paid? Well, yeah, that's typically the case. Especially if it's one of those strict deadline jobs that I nail. I live in a pretty run-down apartment in a more I guess poor part of the city. It's a bit more dim here, even at night, but I love the view my apartment has. I can open the window that goes to the fire escape and see all of the dancing lights at night. I can usually hear the hustle and bustle going on, too, especially if there's some sort of event going on. I would be hard-pressed to find somewhere else I enjoy as much as I do. It may be run-down, but it's quaint. And I do like my neighbors. There's a family of six that lives next door to me; there are three younger kids, one kid that could be out on their own but they're trying to work on attending a school to get a degree for engineering or something like that. They work their butt off and their parents let them stay home, so I can respect that. The kids love me and although I can't say I'm a huge fan of kids in general, these three have won me over. They've never seen anyone with full animal body mods like myself and they're always so curious and like to try to play games with me. I will occasionally help babysit them as well if I know I won't have to leave impromptu for a job anytime soon. Then there's an older lady that lives on the other side of me. She never really got the hang of technology, so her entire apartment is filled with vintage stuff, some of which I have no idea how she acquired. She has some nice stories to share and I'll visit her occasionally just to give her some company. She'll usually talk about things her and her now-deceased husband used to get up to, or share stories her parents passed on to her. She also has quite the photo collection, back when photos were still printed out from computers and weren't 3D holos. Her photo albums are truly a lot of fun to look at. Oh, and then there's a guy down the hall -- he's maybe a little obsessed with my body mods, but I think he means well. He's an artist that uses old traditional methods mostly, but unfortunately despite having pretty good talent, he isn't well-known enough to make a good living off of things, so he's stuck in this small apartment complex, pursuing his passion until he's able to start getting more income from his work. He's also a pretty big nerd and we'll sometimes game together in VR.

Sorry, I'm not that great at talking about myself. Ah.... hmm. Oh! I have a couple of scars I've got while doing my job. This one here, one my left brow, I got when I first started the job and miscalculated a jump and wound up going head-first into the top edge of a building. I managed to grab onto a windowsill a couple of stories below and hoist myself back up and finished the job, but that one required quite a bit of TLC. I have this other one on my right shoulder, too. That one was actually during one of those strict deadline jobs; Boss said it was a hot item and needed to be delivered ASAP as there were a lot of eyes on it. They didn't disclose that there would be armed people trying to steal said package. I took a bullet to the shoulder that time, but still met the deadline. I can't say for sure, but I think Boss was both guilty and impressed -- they covered all medical expenses and actually provided some sort of prototype digital visor headset type of thing. It has a lot of functions -- it can act as a way to access VR, phone calls, messages, video calls, and several other things. What it helps out with most though, as long as I remember to turn this specific mode on, is pinpointing individuals of interest or individuals who may be hostile or have ill intent; like those hiding around a corner. If they have any sort of body mod, it'll detect it and be able to pull up a sort of body profile of the individual, including their heart rate, stress level, and if they are carrying any weapons. I feel it's sort of a dangerous tool, especially if it would get into the wrong hands, but I wasn't going to decline a gift from my employer. It's actually helped me on several jobs since then; avoiding small crowds, unruly individuals, and finding quicker paths to my destinations. There has been a time or two when the drop-off has changed halfway through a job and with this visor thing, it will tell me the new location, giving me coordinates as well as an image of what the location looks like.

Heck, looks like I'm getting a message pertaining to another job. This one's pretty urgent, so I'll leave you be. Hope you enjoyed your stay! Stay out of trouble, and whatever you do, don't fall for the homeless guy scam on the corner a block south of here. That guy's a real persistent jerk. See ya around!
