Who am I? Where do I belong?

Once upon a time, there was a book - a magical book - hidden in the basement of Cafe Sumikko, long forgotten. It was not until Obake was cleaning the basement that the book was found - and its magical properties were activated, hurling the Sumikko into the story!

They found themselves in the world of Momotarou, and everyone was assigned a part: Shirokuma as the mom, Tonkatsu as the dad, and Neko as the titular character of Momotarou. Even Penguin? and Tokage - and the minikko, too! - had roles as trees and bushes and butterflies.

But there seemed to be someone new there - someone with no part at all.

A hiyoko?

Hiyoko was a lonely little bird that did not seem to know which story it belonged to. Well, the Sumikko were not going to stand for that! Penguin? and the others declared that they would find Hiyoko's story and where he belonged. Before they could decide on a plan, however, the magic of the storybook was activated once again, and they were hurled into different stories!

Shirokuma and Furoshiki found themselves in the world of The Little Matchstick Girl. But it did not seem like Hiyoko belonged here...

Next came Tokage and Prince Nisetsumuri in The Little Mermaid -- but Hiyoko didn't belong here..

Suddenly, Hiyoko was on a flying carpet with Penguin? in Arabian Nights! What an adventure! ...but it seemed Hiyoko was not part of this story, either.

Nor did it belong with Tonkatsu and Ebifurai no Shippo in Little Red Riding Hood...

...and although Hiyoko met many new friends with Neko back in Momotarou, it was not a part of this place, either.

Where does Hiyoko belong?

Of course! The Ugly Duckling! That is certainly the story Hiyoko is from! The Sumikko helped Hiyoko out to the lake to meet the waiting swans...

...but wait, what is that...? Another hiyoko...?

...does this mean that Hiyoko wasn't from The Ugly Duckling after all?

The Sumikko and Hiyoko fell and fell until they reached the final page of the book - the World of Blank Pages. There was nothing here other than Hiyoko -- and something seemed to be happening. What was wrong with Hiyoko?!

Now Hiyoko remembered...

So very long ago, someone drew a hiyoko on the last page of the book. In time, the book was forgotten -- and so was the picture of Hiyoko, stuck inside the book and forever lonely. Hiyoko could not bear the lonliness any longer. It used a tiny bit of magic to bring itself to life and set out on a journey to find friends - and find a place where it would belong...

No wonder Hiyoko did not belong in any of the worlds. There was no story for Hiyoko. It was truly alone.

"Wait!" said Shirokuma. "Why don't you come back with us and be a Sumikko?"

Shirokuma opened up Furoshiki and revealed a collection of beautiful cherry blossoms! Everyone took one - the Sumikko, the minikko, and Hiyoko. Finally, a family and friends - a place for Hiyoko to belong!

Suddenly, there was a brilliant light in the sky -- an opening to the world of the Sumikko! Using a pile of things collected from the stories throughout the book, the Sumikko built a huge tower of parts to reach the portal and get back home.

There was just one problem -- Hiyoko could not make it through the portal.

Nor could the cherry blossoms Shirokuma had passed out to everyone. It turned out that things in the book's world had to stay there - even Hiyoko. But it was time for the Sumikko to go home. Hiyoko cried and waved goodbye to its new friends - friends it would never, ever forget.

And when the Sumikko arrived safely back in their world, they cried, too.

A few days later, the Sumikko gathered at the cafe once more -- and wait, what are you Sumikko doing to that book?

Oh! Now Hiyoko has a house and a garden -- and friends! All the Sumikko are there! Hiyoko now has a place to belong, and it will never be lonely again!

and down on the page... is Hiyoko smiling?

Goodbye, let's meet again
I enjoyed this time together
The kaleidoscope turns, and us along with it...
