I despise this place.

I wish this sun-soaked temple would just crumble already. I want it to fail, to plummet through the heavenous skies and crash to the earth with everything else. Nothing else escaped, nothing else survived. Why is it this place, this marble and sandstone, did? No matter how many times I bash my tail against these pillars, they refuse to even crack. I have flung myself to glass panes, and they do not even groan on impact.

I hate this place.

Oh, how I wish the shadows would brave the heavens and tear through the clouds like they did before. How I wish the sun would be devoured by an endless serpent, with no more light to bleach stone and fur. There will be nothing left, and those shadows can finally get what they wanted, the end of these heavens. This cursed temple is all that remains, anyways. Why don't they just come and claim it already?!

I resent this place.

"It will only take a moment," he told me, "we shall return by sunrise." I have counted every sun, every moon, ever comet in this sky. I don't know what sun he thought he was observing, for it's clearly not mine. It's not this worlds sun, I've already seen it die and come back again. So I looked further out, for more brilliance in that dark void above heaven, and I counted them too. He's still not returned, and I resent this place for it.

I mourn this place.

Within these floors, lies glass chambers. Even with all this time, I haven't counted them all. They are all of different colors and hues, perhaps even more than I could ever see. I've seen others hold them - they are delicate and easily broken. Yet with that fragility, they can create new life from almost nothing. They left them in this temple, before they all vanished below the clouds. To the abyss, to the earth, to the shadows. I don't think, I will ever see them again.

I hurt this place.

I never wanted to be here, to become one of them. I would destroy their totems and benches, I would snap the trees and uproot clouds and wires. The damage I did, that I did to this place, it was never enough for them. They simply replaced it all, replanted, and still smiled my way. Greeted me with a name they shouldn't ever utter. If they wouldn't do it, then I would.

With my own claws, I tore apart the wings I was never meant to use. They were so small, and useless. I ripped the feathers off my back, and threw them off the edge of the heavens. I let the bones fall through the clouds, to be worshiped by some creature at the bottom. I took the halo, and let its fragments splinter in my maw. It hurt, it hurt just as bad as when the sky fell, but it was worth it, to get it off me permanently.

I am the last Angel in this place.

I know this is true. There has not been any movement above these clouds since the last time I saw their wings vanish below. I saw them all, hundreds of pale feathers and scales, plummet out of the sun's light. I've seen it before, I've felt this before. But this time, there is no one to come get me, to claim my soul for the afterlife.

It is my eternal charge to guard this temple, that holds the last of life on this planet.
