Believe it or not, I have a time traveler in my family.

It all began when I found some old photos of my family in the attic. One of the creatures in the photos looked very different from the rest of my family. They looked like they were a member of a jungle tribe or something. My mother was unwilling to tell me who they were, so I had to conduct research on my own.

The truth shocked me: the creature was from a different time period than the rest of the family members in the photo. Her name was Willow, and she was a member of the Malerudi, an ancient tribe that inhabited the area now known as Shadowglen.

It turns out she had met a group of time travelers. One of them desired to change the history of Willow’s people. It turns out that the Malerudi went down in history as being technologically advanced for its time but also a very cruel culture. The leaders practiced dark magic and conducted horrific sacrifices with anyone who opposed them.

One of the Malerudi’s darkest secrets was using dark magic to create an army of food warriors to fight enemy kingdoms. Scholars have suggested the ancient civilization that lived in what is now modern day Veta may have fallen due to attacks by the Malerudi.

Willow herself was a simple peasant girl who was horrified to learn the dark secrets her culture had. For a while, she had carried some reservations towards how her leaders acted towards certain scenarios. After Willow heard about how the Malerudi fell into the obscurity of history, Willow offered to help the time travelers change history so her people could be saved.

Sadly, the time travelers were unable to bring change and ended up having to flee back into the stream of time. In a strange twist of fate, the time travelers had to bring Willow along with them to protect her from the wrath of the Malerudi leaders.

Willow traveled with them for a while, experiencing adventures beyond the imagination of her fellow tribe members. Eventually Willow met my family, the descendants of the Malerudi. Family memoirs of the encounter state that Fey wept at learning what the descendants of her people had experienced during the centuries after the fall of the Malerudi empire. One of these hardships was a curse that was cast by someone who abhorred the Malerudi. The curse made all the family members take on an appearance that looked like a combination between graveyard and hydrus pets. In addition, some descendants ended up with abilities that were meant to hinder the Malerudi from rising to power again.

Eventually Willow returned to her time period. Well, sort of. She returned to help save her family and others on the day the Malerudi civilization fell. She chose to stay and help those displaced by the collapse of the Malerudi civilization, bidding her time traveling companions a hearty farewell.

Over the centuries my family has not been forthcoming to talk about Willow due to the shame they feel over their ancestor’s actions. In fact, many of them have disavowed any innate magical prowess. The only exceptions are abilities born from our family curse, which can’t be fully suppressed.

I, however, do not share my family’s stance.

I am currently trying to compile a history of Willow and her efforts to make amends for the damage the ancient Malerudi leaders caused. I also sought to contact family members who have chosen to practice magic in spite of our family’s sordid past.
