THE BURNING SNAKE THAT GUARDS THE FOREST

Boitatá, from the Tupi-Guarani words Boi (Snake) and Tata (Fire), is a giant anaconda, with thousands and thousands of eyes rippling its hide and perpetual fire coming from its scales. It is one of the many protectors of the Amazon Forest.

According to legend, Boitatá was born in a starless night - one that crawled so slowly that humans thought day would never come again. Then, the torrential rains came, flooding the forest and forcing all of the animals to run to higher ground.

The Anaconda, who lived in a dark cave, woke up due to the flooding and, famished, went on the hunt - with the added advantage of being the only animal capable of seeing in the dark. It had a particular taste; slithering around the frightened animals, slowly constricting them and savoring their eyeballs before abandoning their bloodied, eyeless corpses behind.

It ate so many eyes that its own skin started to glow with the last rays of light the eyes that it consumed saw. It transformed, its body morphing into conjoined glittering eyes, fire balls, alive fire, boitatá, Snake Made of Fire.

Those who have the misfortune of crossing the Burning Snake run the risk of dying, going insane or getting their own eyes eaten by the creature - a last warning to not set foot on those cursed woods ever again.
