“Liar. You do care- all you do is care; you care about everything and everyone.
It’s one of your more admirable weaknesses.”

A smart-mouthed, surly old physician, jaded and tired from a long war that felt like it would never end. Ratchet is considered one of the finest medics to ever have been forged, with hands that move so gracefully and delicately that they’re almost hypnotic to watch. Despite this, he’s surprisingly humble about his own abilities, with a tendency to downplay them more often than not.

Those who only know him by reputation know him as a brilliant but crass physician, gifted with quick and steady hands, a gentle touch, and impeccable aim when throwing wrenches at deserving heads. The people who know him best know a sad, tired old soldier who has found peace to be a letdown, feeling increasingly obsolete in a world that has moved on.

A lot of people mistake Ratchet’s gruff, acerbic nature and often poor bedside manners to him being mean, unfeeling, or cruel, when that’s hardly the case. In fact, a lot of his behavior has been a mask built up since his free clinic in the Dead End all the way through a war that felt endless to hide the fact that he cares what sometimes feels like too much.

While capable of detaching himself from his emotions in his work, it weighs heavy on him, and he remembers the name of every patient lost under his care. Considering he was a combat medic, that list is sadly long. He never recharges well as a result, and it’s really only after he has a consistent berth partner that he starts actually recharging well. It’s part of why he’s a clinger when he recharges, and when he’s in private, why he’s generally quite affectionate.

Before the war, he was - while something of a player - gentle and soft-spoken in professional settings. But time has not been kind to him, and he’s happy to cultivate the reputation he’s come to attain as being cold, brusque, bitter, and possibly even mean and hateful, just as a means to keep most people at arm’s length. But his care for his medical team is the first place the cracks in the mask show.

His drive to help is almost stronger than his drive for self preservation.

Interestingly, Ratchet was an optimist in his youth, and had quite the reputation as the “party ambulance.” He was reckless, wild, and though he managed to graduate med school summa cum laude, it was on his extraordinary skills and scores… his attendance was legendarily abysmal. His optimism - and his penchant for partying - wore away with the war, and he considers himself a realist now. He was also a devout Spectralist when he was much younger, though time has weathered his belief in gods and higher powers, and he is a very self professed atheist now.

One thing that time did give him was a long, bitter engex addiction he turned to in order to manage his conflicted, pained emotions during the war. He’s since kicked the habit cold turkey, hard as it was, and while he allows himself a drink now and then, he is very careful never to have more than one or two.
