A Tigrean seemingly made of shadows approaches you. Their behavior is strange for a nightmare pet, yet you can see the dullness and surrender in their eyes. They’re not here to fight. You ask what has happened. Why their body has been reduced to this form.

“I wasn’t always like this y’know. I wasn’t always this scary, or this ugly. I was normal, just like you. I was happy, I found pleasure in living life! But now, what is there to keep me going? The only person who hasn’t turned their back on me is my reflection. Even my owner hates me now.”

You assure them that they are cared about, by you!

“Lies. You. Are. A. LIAR!!”

They slash their claws towards you, missing your flesh by a hair. Their claws gleam in the darkness as they thunder towards you, teeth bared and fur bristling. They sense the fear in your body and slow. They’re in tears as their eyes pierce your soul.

“Get out! Just leave me alone!”

You attempt to console Nightmare, yet it seems to be in vain. Their heart is broken beyond repair, and their mind is confused beyond reason. They seem to have a constant battle with themselves as they shake their head absentmindedly. The tears fall like rain over land that’s been dry for years.

“Why are you still here? What do you want from me!?”

You state that you want to be the light they need. You’re here to heal them. Even if you can’t give them back their color and dignity, you can start from here and rebuild something better.

“Why? Is it because you think there’s something in it for you?”

You shake your head and giggle. You say that the only thing you’ll gain from this, is a new friend. At least you hope so. Nightmare’s eyes shine with hope, the gleam telling you this was the first time in a long time. The period of pain has ended, and soon, something better will begin.

“…Thank you.”

The beast purrs with a voice as deep as passive thunder, and for a moment, you believed you could see a shimmer of red under their monochrome pelt.

“And please, call me Zale.”
