I am Sigrún a Valkyrie of Odin and Freyja.

I was born to King Högne of Östergötland, and fell in love with a man named Helgi. But I was betrothed to Höðbroddr, the son of king Granmarr of Södermanland. My family insisted I marry the prince of Södermanland, despite his reputation of cruelness, as it would bring them great wealth. Brave Helgi invaded Södermanland and slayed anyone opposing our relationship. Only one of my brothers, Dagr, was left alive under the condition he swear fealty to Helgi.

Dagr swore the oath, but broke it... for he felt he was obliged by honor to avenge our father and brothers who had gone to Södermanland in defense of king Granmarr and Höðbroddr. He summoned Odin, who gave him a spear, which he used to kill Helgi. When Dagr came to me and told me of what he had done I cursed him to only be able to survive of carrion in the woods.

My beloved Helgi was put in a barrow… but returned for one night from Valhalla so we could spend one last night together. My grief overwhelmed me, and I died of heartbreak at the loss Helgi.

Only Freyja and Odin took me to Valhalla, where they gave me a cloak made of swan feathers, and made me a Valkyrie. There in Valhalla I live my days fighting for and serving the Aesir, but with my beloved Helgi.

I am one of the leaders of a host of nine Valkyries. Including myself there is also Hildr and Skeggjöld, Hrist and Mist, Randgríðr, Reginleifr, Herfjötur, and Göll. Together we choose the slain to take to Asgard for either Freyja or Odin.
