From deep in the abyssal trenches to the rippling gleam of sunlight on the seafloor in the tropical shallows, Spindrift chased the currents. She loved the reefs the most, where life blossomed in vibrant colors and treasures were left abandoned in the sand. She would gather these things, glinting with promise, and bring them along with her, looking for new occupants. Sometimes, Spindrift flitted through them herself, squeezing through the tight spaces before jetting back into the ocean’s main currents. At times, she had friends who traveled with her through the waves, riding along on her shoulders. Those were happy times. At times she was alone in the vast expanse. These were happy times too, as Spindrift was free to explore.

When ships would cross her path, blocking the light from above before it could filter through the water to the seafloor, she would swim to the surface. The wake of the ship through the sea would send her tumbling, almost like the surf brake near the shore in the shallows she loved, and she would play in those artificial currents just as she did with the natural ones. She didn’t know if the crew saw her playing with their ships; she didn’t much care if they did. She had seen the creatures with their skinny flippers and lack of tail and knew they wouldn’t fare well in the waves with her if they did wish to play. Sometimes, though, she would see them along the sandy beaches, gazing out at the watery world she loved so much, and in these times, she would leave them a gift to find: one of her treasures to carry their love of the sea home with them.
