theres something out there she says. of course, i never believed her. she's always got these wild stories about large ape-like men in these woods. the mid-west is largely forested with rolling farms, the south is covered in swamps, and mountain ranges span from here to there.
there's a ring at the doorbell

"hey miss sanders, can johnnie come outside," kenny said through the door.
i give a pleading look at mama and she said as long as my chores and homework were finished, i was allowed to go outside
"sure sweetheart" mama said after confirming

so i grab my jacket and dart out the door, hop on my bike, joining kenny outside. and we take off into the woods behind my house. we make it about two miles in and land at our usual spot. kenny tells me about a sweet pond, farther down into the woods, that his father took him to last weekend. its farther than we usually go and mama doesnt like me going out that far especially so close to dark. we got a few hours before the sun goes down i think to myself so i think everything is should be fine. after riding our bikes about a few miles in kenny stops. he looks confused, a frustrated look on his face.
"i think we went the wrong way or took a wrong turn someplace, he said.

"mama always said dont whistle in the woods", i say to kenny.
"are you serious? that's just some stupid supersition," kenny says mockingly and laughs.
and i guess sorta think that too, but mama is never wrong. i stand there staring into the trees.
"I DOUBLE DOG DARE YOU to whistle," kenny interupts my trance
i dont want to look like a chicken, i think to myself
