Freydis was born to King Sigurd of Birka, and his wife Amma. She was their first child together and they were in complete awe and joy with her. They wanted to thank the Goddess Freyja for such a little jewel of a daughter that they named her Freydis, after the Goddess. The doting parents were so in love with their little family and with each other that a year later they had another daughter, whom they named Gyda. And then a year after that Amma died in childbirth, as did the little boy she was carrying.
Her father went into a deep depression after that, and the only thing that pulled him through it some days were his two little girls. Growing up the women tried to teach Freydis how to cook and how to use the loom and how to sew. But Freydis didn't have the patience for such things as Gyda did. No, Freydis was more interested in being outside, practicing fighting with some of the boys her age, and going hunting, so rather than force her to endure much sewing, she was often tasked with making sure the animals were handled.
Despite the fact that they were so different from one another, both girls were very close to each other, and to their father who spoiled them with anything they could possibly need or want: clothing, jewelry, fur cloaks, shoes, etc. Sigurd was so close to his daughters that he even knew their color and style preferences. Freydis leaned more towards dark and rich colors, and loved the color gold. She liked to dress up, but also had a practical side to her that wanted to wear men's clothing so she could practice with weapons with the rest of the guys. As far as jewelry she liked statement pieces.
Freydis was also a little more wild than prim and proper Gyda. She lost her virginity when she was fifteen, and then discovered the art of seidr through Dyrfinna, the Volva of their kingdom. Freydis was a natural at it, and a quick learner. She learned all the different ways to submit yourself to receiving visions through ecstatic trance, and while using henbane to do so was a fun away to do it, the most enjoyable way for Freydis was very physical.
Freydis went to Dyrfinna frequently, even after surpassing Dyrfinna's ability to teach the art, just because she enjoyed giving and receiving visions from her. In truth, Freydis loved her, but they both knew Freydis could never be loyal to Dyrfinna as a partner, which was what Dyrfinna was looking for in a partner. Freydis would have to get married one day, and likely soon, she knew. But until then she planned to have her fun.
When Egil Angantyrsson came to Birka they hosted him as a guest. Gyda, who served as Lady of the House, passed the drinking horn around and after that Freydis got up and immediately began drinking with the men who came to visit, asking them question about where they came from. The whole crowd fell silent right after Egil asked for Gyda to marry him. Freydis looked across the crowd at her sister, who she could see was visibly uncomfortable, but Gyda snapped out of it and said that she was sorry but she wouldn't wed until after Freydis had married. Freydis snorted and replied,"If I get married!" and the whole crowd burst out into laughter and merriment once more after that awkward silence.
Freydis continued to practice fighting(Sigurd had hired a young shieldmaiden named Fjormos to teach Freydis), and continued to practice seidr. Then in one vision she saw a golden wolf approach their town, only she knew it to be symbolic. She just couldn't figure out what it meant until it hit her right in the face. Raiding ships bearing a golden wolf on a green field upon their masts and shields that hung along the gunwales approached. It was the symbol of Tonsberg.
The ships bore King Halfdan's sons Harald and Ubbe and their raiding party. Harald explained that while they were away raiding, Jarl Angantyr attacked Tonsberg, burned his family alive in the Great Hall, and now proclaimed himself King of Tonsberg. Harald asked them to aid him in reclaiming the land that had been in his family for generations upon generations. King Sigurd could sympathize with the lad, and offered him 5 ships of warriors. Freydis thought it was the right thing to do.
She began to prepare for battle, when her father stopped her and asked what she was doing. She explained that she wanted to go with to fight, but her father put a stop to that. He would not risk losing her. Frustrated, Freydis decided to try to see the battle through one of the warriors futures that night. She met Torsten, a Tonsberg Berserker, and the two had several drinks together before vanishing from the Great Hall for the rest of the night.
Freydis forsaw victory. And sure enough, there was victory.
Life went on, and Freydis continued to practice fighting with Fjormos, and seidr with Dyrfinna. Then one day Dyrfinna bolted up from a vision, and told Freydis that she needed to get out of Birka. She needed to get Fjormos and leave immediately. Freydis asked if she was coming, and Dyrfinna replied she couldn't, that Gyda would need her. Freydis was confused, but the panic in Dyrfinna's voice and eyes told Freydis not to ask any more questions but just to go. So Freydis found Fjormos and told her what happened with Dyrfinna, and the two immediately left Birka with nothing but the clothes on their backs and no idea of where to go or what to do.
Not knowing what was happening, or how long she would need to be gone for, Freydis decided to set course for their ally, Tonsberg, where she'd be able to get some news, and maybe some help. Little does she know that Harald just sent a messenger to Birka that the wedding is canceled.

I hope you'll be alright. Stay strong, no matter what comes, sister. I'll be back soon, I promise.

I remember those nights in Birka very well. I'd be interested in sharing tonight like that...
