Hi! My name is Defiant. At least it is now. When I was younger I was just known as Tiny, because I was so much shorter than most kids my age. I earned the name Defiant when I was in sixth grade. My class had just gotten a new student named Bright. I was really excited to meet someone new and I took her to see my favorite place in the whole school, the library. She seemed nice enough, but I was soon to learn that she wasn't nice at all. It happened a few days later, during recess. It was winter so we couldn't go outside to play. I was wandering through the school looking for something to do and wandered into the auditorium. I saw Beauty, Confident and Clear (the popular girls) sitting up on the stage just talking with each other. I was kind of surprised to see Bright sitting with them but didn't really think much of it. Sitting on stage for a bit seemed as good a thing as any to do, so I went to the other end and after about four tries I managed to get up. I was sitting there just daydreaming (my usual pastime) when Bright called out, "Hey, you can't sit up here!" I turned and looked at her, puzzled. "No? Why not? You're all sitting up here." She said in a really annoying smug voice, "WE'RE allowed." I glanced at the other three, they all looked like they wanted to be somewhere else. I decided I wasn't going to put up with that from some totally new kid. I stood up and said, "I think we need to talk about this some more. Let's just step behind the curtains and have a little discussion." I started looking for the opening in the curtains, which wasn't easy since they were really heavy. She got this startled look on her face and just kind of froze. I kept inviting her back to have "a little talk" and she just sat there, not looking at me or moving. I finally gave up and snapped, "Forget it. I've got better things to do than hang around by a COWARD." I hopped off the stage and started to leave. Behind me I heard Confident say, "Yeah, I think Defiant is right." I glanced behind me and saw the three of them also jump off the stage, leaving Bright sitting there by herself. I felt a warm feeling at Confident's words and a happiness at my new name. After all, Defiant is a much nicer name than Tiny!
