The Rum Runner
Raphael wasn’t always the business. That's not to say he doesn't like rum and all other alcohol-related things. Raphael's father was the owner of a pub renowned for the calibre of its drink and that attracted customers from all over. Although its clientele tended to be less of the fine aristocrats type and more of the rowdy, drink-five-pints-and-start-a-punch-up pirate variety.
But when the Navy arrived to clamp down on the piratical activities of the port, they decided that rum was the source of the problem. The commander of the navy shut down all the pubs on a charge of 'encouraging illegal and unsavoury activities' and arrested all the pub owners.
A somewhat inconvenient and rather serious feud with the island tribe who might have aided them and the large number of pirates who, being pirates, had scarpered when they head the first rumours of a naval face-off, meant that the towns people were easily overwhelmed, and unable to stop the Navy take over.
The town was left dry and sober and nobody liked it. It also meant that the economy of the town was decimated.
Raphael is fairly young to be breaking the law but he does what he has to do to get by, and it seems that the best way to make a living is to smuggle rum. Perhaps with the penalty of imprisonment or even death for being caught out it might not be the most prudent thing to do, but people like rum, and someone's got to find it. With the number of authorities ever-increasing Raphael has had to find more inventive ways of imported the liquor. Lucky for Raph he's sharp and has the appropriate shady connections...♥️ c:
