The Merf was born with out whiskers due to a genetic defect. whiskers sense air movements to determine what is in the surrounding vicinity. they become docile if grabbed by the whiskers - thus he is usually very calm, although one should be wary if he raises his tail straight up, as it is a signal that he is about to pounce and bite.
Its lithe muscles allow it to walk elegantly without making a sound.
