Dresden was crafted by Abaddon from a small piece of her own soul to help search for her daughter, but she made a mistake, so his wings were paralyzed. She built him a mechanical body (the chest of it is a birdcage that he lives in) to circumvent the paralysis. Since he is essentially a part of Abaddon's soul, their consciousness is linked together, allowing them to communicate across vast distances. He gathers memories from the other inhabitants of the Underworld for her, but doesn't always like what he discovers and is attempting to teach himself to conceal his thoughts from Abaddon so he can liberate himself from her control and search for his own purpose.
