Rodney is special. He stands out like a shining star against all others besides him. Although he seems not to know it, his radiance is not entirely accounted for by his obvious genius... but also by his wealth of friendship and unknown well of courage, immeasurable fathoms deep and forever replenishing. There are many things that can bring a smile to his face, though it is a smile that never reaches his eyes, and there is always a shadow behind them. In the end, his love for humanity and the simple things keep him from leaving, and his distant nature is excused, but that doesn't stop him from looking forward to the day when he can finally rest and not have to put up with the world simply for appearances sake.
A large part of what allows Rodney to appreciate humanity is the fact that he does not interact with it much. Rodney is a mute, having decided long ago that most of what is said isn't worth the time it takes to say, and what is worth it more than usually isn't even heard. If you speak to him, he will smile and nod conversationally, truly listening and taking in every word, but he will not participate and he will not respond. There is no arrogance in his actions and the only consequence of his choice is an occasional need for a spokesperson. Most seem to understand his choice. Many even applaud him for it, but when the time comes for them to speak on his behalf... Rodney knows better than to expect anyone to stand their ground. Hope holds no candle to experience.
Instead, Rodney entrusts his hopes to science. Without the need for social interaction, he finds a wealth of time can be spent learning, reading, experimenting, and hypothesizing. The wonder of the world is anyone's to behold, but true appreciation requires an open mind sometimes.
