Her love of insects started when she was very young. She was playing in the garden when she discovered an ants nest, unsure of what it was, she pushed all the dirt that formed the ant-hill into the little hole, after a few minutes of poking about she got bored and wandered around the garden some more. Soon she came across another ant-hill, but this ant-hill had something different about it – there was a long trail of ants running up the hill and into the hole, each carrying a crumb that seemed way too big for their tiny bodies.
This fascinated Sally, and she started to feel guilty about ruining their nest, she kept thinking about how hard the tiny creatures had probably worked on it. She decided to try to make up for it and placed a piece of bread next to their nest, hoping they would feed off of it.
After the incident with the ants, Sally started paying more attention to the creatures that shared the garden with her – caterpillars, butterflies, ladybugs, even flies. She starting collecting them in jars at first, but was upset when they died, so soon she decided to just watch them in the garden.
But watching them outside wasn't enough for her. As she grew older, her interest in insects grew from a young child's fascination, to a strong desire to learn about them. She found as many books she could about different insects, and spent many hours researching on the internet. As she learned more, the more she wanted to know. Each piece of information answered one question but opened another.
She finished her schooling and decided that she was going to study insects for a living. This meant she had to collect insects so she could examine them at any time. First she made sure she knew how to take care of the insects she intended to collect, then she went out, armed with traps and jars, and started catching her insects.
Sally now has a room full of healthy insects of many different varieties. (She also has an interest in other bugs, and keeps them too, but her main interest is the insects). She spends her days watching the insects, taking notes on their behavior, reproduction cycles, eating habits, defense techniques and anything else she found interesting. Especially interesting to her, is seeing how different insect species get a long with each other, some don't get a long at all, others help each other, a tiny few even cross breed!
Occasionally she notices something that she hasn't ever heard of before, and she makes sure to make a bold note of it. She puts all her findings in a notebook, before typing them up, adding pictures and publishing books. She has made quite a bit of money off of her work, and has even discovered some new species of insect. A childhood fascination turned into a career for Sally, and she feels an attachment to every insect she owns, making sure they get the best care in exchange for the information and joy that they give her.
