Ulysses is a retired witch hunter. Or, as he would say, he's just damned tired. Once he reached a certain age, it became quite clear to him that much of what he believed in didn't mean a thing to most anyone else any more. The world had changed, and his services were no longer needed. That, he often says, is the day he finally realized he was old. That, and the day the first wiccan website popped up on the old WWW (a faculty Ulysses was never able to cope with).
His eyes have long been a little cloudy, his skin loose, his fur dull, his spikes chipped, his posture slumped, his bones frail, his muscles tender, and his heart weak. But his soul was always there, always strong, always willing. Maybe it was just a peck tarnished and perhaps not as pure as a priest's, but it has a fighting spirit, and he always thought he was doing the right thing. Some day he hopes he'll be able to rest and put down the mantle of obligations he has long held unto himself. Not that he's looking forward to his afterlife, not with his list of lifetime accomplishments. However right you think you are, there's only so much you can do to a witch (evil or not) before your name ends up on the wrong side of the list.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Or frozen door-to-door salesmen, as one of his favorite books says. Not that he believes in such fanciful things, but it's nice to hope sometimes.
