The Tylwith Teg, or fair folk, are the elves and fairies of Welsh folklore. They are divided into many races - the gwragedd annwn of the lake-bottom, the greedy coblynau the mines, and the friendly household bwbachod, to name a few. Gwynn was raised among the ellyllon in the Clocaenog Forest by her father. Gwynn's father was ellyll, but her estranged mother was gwyll.

The name Gwynn is often given to half-gwyll children to offset the dark tendencies of their blood, and such children are rare. Gwyllion are eerie, elusive fay of the mountains, travelling only under cover of night, storms, or thick fog. Their affinity for witchcraft is what cements their sinister reputation, many travelers having been lured off the paths that wind their foggy territories.

However, raised in the wild, idyllic groves by her father and his cheery elf-kin, her youth was filled with laughter, mischief, and dappled sunlight. The elves embraced her, as is their nature, though her differences were impossible to ignore. The ellyllon are relentlessly gregarious, with eyes and hair the colors of the forest, while Gwynn was quiet, pale, with white-blonde hair and sooty black eyes. Gwynn was tinkering with will-o-wisps and conjuring mist by her seventh birthday, while the ellyllon are clumsy, lazy mages. The ravens and red squirrels that frolicked among her peers avoided Gwynn, which deeply troubled the little fay. Around the time her magic surfaced, however, she was approached by a young badger who would not leave her side, who she named Gruffudd, eventually to realize he was, in fact, her familiar. The perfect size to ride around on, Gruffudd brought Gwynn much popularity with the elves.

In spite of the friendliness of the elves, Gwynn did not make or keep friends very easily, with one exception; Brann had adored the unique fairy since they were toddlers, crawling around after her in the leaf piles. He was the only elf who shared her interest in magic; the two dreamed up miraculous spells and epic quests, both of them over the moon when Gwynn’s magic awakened and their dreams became real. Brann’s enthusiastic attempts to copy would often get them both in trouble.

She would eventually leave her family in the woods, following a lifelong itch for open vistas and immersive, secluded study. She did not go far, however, just a few miles east to the Clwydian Range, and she often receives Brann or her father in her mountain refuge.
