The girl needed air.
Everything was just too heavy, and she needed to get away from it. Her cloudy eyes flickered around the landscape as she looked for an escape route, and she made a beeline for the trees. There, she'd get some energy back. There she'd find some peace.
She leaned against the first tree she encountered, a sturdy laurel with a branch jutting out at the girl's shoulder-height, curved up like a seat. She touched it, and for a moment she considered climbing up to sit on it, but she was too tired, so instead she sank to the grass and nestled between the roots.
"Hi!"
The girl looked up, startled. A boy roughly her age stood above her, beaming the biggest grin she'd ever seen. Sunlight glowed through his blonde hair, and his eyes danced emerald. He held out his hand to help her up. "I heard you, so I came to say hi!"
The girl shied away from his hand, looking confused. "Heard? I didn't-"
"Oh yes, you're loud as anything! I don't ever get people who sound that loud."
"I'm sorry," the girl stammered, feeling guilty even though she didn't know what noise she had been making.
"Don't worry about it! I never get company, it's quiet here. I'm alone, you know." The boy said this with no sign of sadness, and the girl didn't know what to say. How could she reply to something like that?
"It's not a big deal, though. I think a lot of us are alone. Most of the adults went deep deep below."
"What-" the girl managed before her mouth just hung in disbelief. What was this boy saying? He sounded so- morbid, and yet his smile never wavered.
"I just mean, they don't like it up here, so they went to sleep. Until the humans go away. It's been a long time."
The girl slowly realized she was talking to a mad person. She started to stand. She was going to leave now.
"Oh no, don't go!" The boy protested, grabbing her hand before she could react. "Just because I'm a tree and you're a human, doesn't mean we can't be friends!"
"You aren't a tree," the girl said, shaking her head.
"Well, no, but you aren't a human either if you want to get technical!" The boy laughed. "You are now, sure, and I'm a tree now, but we're just taking up that space while we're here. In reality, we're much much more interesting!" The boy paused, and a puzzled look crossed his face. "Hey... something's gone in there..."
The girl tried to pull away, but the boy put both of his hands on her temples, and then pulled, and the girl felt like something came loose in her head. When the boy pulled his hands back, there was ash in them. He looked at it carefully. "Your happiness shouldn't look like that!" He looked shocked more than anything, and then he blew the ashes out of his palms, where they disappeared on the wind.
The girl knew it was impossible, but her heart ached and so she said, "That was all I had left, how could you take it?"
The boy looked back at her, eyes wide. "But that wasn't happiness at all! It wasn't doing you any good!" He looked at the tree that the girl had been sitting by, and then he said, "I'm okay for a while, leaving. Here, I'll be your happiness!" And with that, he brought his fingers to his lips and blew on them, then put his fingers together in a steeple. When he pulled them away from each other, little gold threads spread between them, and he pushed them against the girl's forehead. Immediately she felt something shift. Her skin became less pale, her eyes brighter, the blackness in her chest started to dissipate.
"What did you do?" The girl asked, not surprised by much anymore.
"I gave you me! I live so much longer than you, little human, so I can spread myself around a bit. It's alright, it'll be alright now." He took her hand.
