Simiel

Simiel was born to a young mother and father. They lived on their own in a very small house near the outskirts of centropolis. Simiel was a pretty happy kid; he was always playing with the neighborhood kids and making scribbly drawings for his mother to put on the fridge.

Everything changed for him when he was six years old. Simiel woke up from a nap to muffled crying and angry whispers. He made his way out of his room only to see his father slap his mother so hard that she fell onto the floor.

Most of the time, the violence only happened to his mother, but when she wasn't around his father discovered that Simiel made just as good of a punching bag. It didn't happen often to him, but Simiel never felt better about it. He couldn't do anything to stop his father, or help his mother. He had to hide the bruises, becoming less social at school and more withdrawn into his studies.

Just before his sixteenth birthday, his mother picked him up from school and just kept driving. Simiel was afraid, but when they settled in a run-down apartment a few cities over, it was like paradise to him. For a few months, there was no father to worry about, and Simiel even started to think that the man might not find them.

But one day, he showed up in their doorway, angrier than ever. It was obvious he'd been drinking, and though Simiel was still young and not very strong, he did his best to keep his father from his mother. However, his dad grabbed a knife from the kitchen and lashed out at the boy. It sliced open his skin on his hip. Simiel was in such pain that he couldn't stop his father as he went after his mother. Her screams floated to his ears as if from a far away place, and the sickening sound of knife sinking into flesh.

A neighbor heard the screams and called the police, so his father had to run before he could do anything to Simiel. The police caught him and the man was sent to jail. They put Simiel in foster care, temporarily. He ran away after a week or two, not wanting to be anywhere near his father or the strangers they'd stuck him with.

Initially, he went back home and stayed with one of his friends to finish school. He began working as a dishwasher at a nice restaurant in the city. Although he completed high school with help from his friend's parents, Simiel never went on to college. Today, he works as a server at the very same restaurant and lives in a small apartment on his own, thanks to some initial financial assisstance from his boss.
