The Abandoned One

As soon as I can walk, hands grab me. I float, bouncing, and it hurts my ribs and my legs are dangling. Darkness surrounds me and I am dropped onto my shaking feet into a tiny room.

A sharp slam makes me skitter to the corner and my pupils dialate in alarm. There is vertigo, a sickening lurch and momentum. The dizzying feeling comes and goes in unpredictable waves. Comes and goes, stops and lurches. I loose a whine and my stale room shakes a little. I don't whine again.

After what I know to be an eternity, there is a final lurch and the vibrating under my paws stops. A sudden, gut-wrenching upward motion makes me fall onto my snout and then thump, thump, thump just like earlier makes it difficult to keep my balance.

Voices, high-pitched, and then hands around me, lifting me out of my box and putting me close to a painted, powdered face. I sneeze from the fumes. A rush of voices. A person, with my tiny room in hand, leaves me with a red-clawed lady and I'm afraid. I want my family. She strokes my wings and I squeeze my eyes shut. I don't like her touch. I growl and she drops me.

My brain rattles and my teeth crunch against each other. I struggle to my feet but am swept up backwards into another tiny, dark room that smells of must and mold.

And I am left there. I wonder if I'm ever going to be fed as I wrap my tail around my body.

The thump, thump, thump returns. Vibration and veritgo.

When it stops, I am free falling and just as my paws lift off the floor, I tumble. A deafening rumble flares and then slowly fades. Light glitters in my eyes and I realize my room is on it's side. I smell grass, dirt, sky. And something else. Something sweet.

But I'm terrified and so I stay put, tucked back in the corner of my box, until the sunlight is orange. I rise and my muscles ache and my stomach is clenching painfully. The sweet, strange scent is too entincing to ignore and I must go towards it.

Cautiously, I step out onto what I instinctively know as grass, though I've never touched it before. Giddiness overwhelms me and I hop in circles, my young wings flapping. The grass between my toes feels undenibly right. I turn my glassy eyes to the site before me and I tilt my head. Green bushes in straight, even lines going all the way to the horizon. And hanging off these plants are red berries. Strawberries.

Padding closer, I leave my box behind, and rotate my large ears as if satellites for danger. There are soft berries on the ground beneath the bushes and my tongue explores one tentatively. A sugary, tangy explosion dazzles my mouth and I devour several crimson delights in a frenzy.

As the sun dips below the groomed field, I waddle back to my tiny room and find peace in a full, warm tummy. I think I could get used to this.
