It didnt matter.
It didnt matter that the ethics board had decided against his latest biological triumph, ensuring it would never see the light of day in most scientific circles. It didnt matter that, although many of his grants came from pharmaceutical companies and research facilities, a good amount of his funding came from the Armys "Bio-Weapons" division.

It didnt matter because he knew he wasnt at fault, ultimately, if his inventions and research were used for shady purposes. It wasnt the application that was important; all of that was aftermath. It was the research, invention and furthering of knowledge itself that mattered.
And it mattered very much.

With these thoughts in mind, he kicked back in his office chair, crossing his boots on the large desk in front of him. He withdrew a box from his pocket, fished out a cigarette and lit it. Taking a slow drag, he contemplated the petri dish occupying the space next to his boots, the contents of which seemed to be pulsating gently.

He exhaled slowly and smiled. He would be remembered. Be it for curing a debilitating disease or developing a super-virus used to wipe out an enemy population, he would be remembered.

That was what mattered.
