"Whole brain emulation or mind uploading (sometimes called mind transfer) is the hypothetical process of transferring or copying a conscious mind from a brain to a non-biological substrate by scanning and mapping a biological brain in detail and copying its state into a computer system or another computational device. The computer would have to run a simulation model so faithful to the original that it would behave in essentially the same way as the original brain, or for all practical purposes, indistinguishably. The simulated mind is assumed to be part of a virtual reality simulated world, supported by an anatomic 3D body simulation model. Alternatively, the simulated mind could be assumed to reside in a computer inside (or connected to) a humanoid robot or a biological body, replacing its brain.
Whole brain emulation is discussed by futurists as a "logical endpoint" of the topical computational neuroscience and neuroinformatics fields, both about brain simulation for medical research purposes. It is discussed in artificial intelligence research publications as an approach to strong AI. Among futurists and within the transhumanist movement it is an important proposed life extension technology, originally suggested in biomedical literature in 1971."

Basically the brain of an old Mahar chemist was copied onto Masao's system as part of an illegal experiment. (Secret underground lab, paid for illegal and risky experiments, so not that illegal after all...) An intelligence test run for the new Biological warfare prototype drone. The old man died shortly afterwards and as his knowledge was still needed and saved in the drone, the other chemists kept MA-540 around as kind of a walking, talking database. The tip of his tail can inject (or spray) any kind of poison (Biological weapon) or antidote (if also programmed for healing befriended units) just by a tiny cut of the blade. He has developed a great interest in gaining more knowledge and reconstructed some of his body parts to make himself more agile. At the current date the lab is abandoned, because Blackmoon left Atebus without a trace after the war - secret labs researching weapons were no longer needed. The lab is still used as a free storage for toxic waste and chemicals though and Masao is experimenting around with them, eventually neutralizing some of the stuff or making it even more... deadly. His minion is a blot of Nanorobotics, very practical to have around for constant maintenance and reconstruction.
