The ball soared from her hands and landed at the far end of the yard. MJ took after it with lightning speed and brought it back to her owner. 'Good girl' the owner said, patting the terrier on the head and smiling. Before she could even get a good grasp on the ball, MJ was barking and jumping around at her feet, wagging her tail in expectation. 'She can be so impatient!' she thought as the ball left her hand again. They continued playing for a few more rounds until MJ started losing her momentum. She wasn't a young jack Russell anymore. Her birthday was just around the corner, and she was going to be eleven.

They stopped to take a break and get the panting dog some water. MJ followed behind her loyally as she started getting the water together. MJ sat down and wagged her tail as the bowl was set down for her. She started lapping up the water quickly. Her owner got herself a glass of water and leaned against the counter, letting the ball roll back and forth. MJ tilted her head a bit and watched, nearly tipping herself over before scampering to trying and get the ball. Her owner laughed, tossing MJ the ball. MJ took it in her teeth and ran out the back door. Her owner shook her head and sighed. MJ had a habit of wandering around the neighborhood and refusing to come back inside until she was good and ready.

MJ plodded down the side walk, ball in teeth. She was surveying her domain, making sure the world was in order. She carried herself like the world would fall to pieces if she were not there to keep things safe. She noticed a squirrel perched on the edge of a fence, letting a low growl reverberate through her body. She almost ran at the intruder, but decided to be merciful since she was only on the first leg of her rounds. She growled again to warn the squirrel if he were there when she got back he would die the death of the enemy. Then she continued on down her block, stopping at various yards and trees to smell for changes in the habits of the people or animals. After an hour of this she came back to her own home, completely forgetting her threat to the squirrel. She was tired now, and home seemed welcome.

MJ went in through the back door, dropped the ball on the ground by her owner, wagged her tail twice to show she was happy to be in her domain, and then curled up for a nap. She was not a puppy any more, and the exploration of her world was more tiring. Still, she had to keep an eye on her kingdom. She yawned, nudged her owner's foot with her head, and promptly fell asleep.
