I never knew just what it was
about this old coffee shop I love so much

Every day Heinz returned to the coffee shop at ten o’clock on the nose. He would come in, take a spot on a chair in the corner and the waitresses would bring him his usual order of a medium coffee with just a splash of cream. He would pay and then sit in silence for an hour, sipping the coffee and staring at the door.

He was waiting, waiting for the day when she came back. She had come to this very coffee shop every day at this exact time for months. He had watched her surreptitiously from his corner seat many times over that time, wishing that he had the courage to speak to her.

Then one day, she hadn’t shown up. He had stayed for hours that day, having the waitresses refill the coffee that he hardly noticed that he had been drinking. But she had never walked through that door. He had never seen her again.

So he waited and he hoped. Someday she might return, and this time he would be ready. He wouldn’t hide in his corner, he had a plan.

He went to take a sip of his coffee but realized it was empty. He sighed and put the cup back on the table. Leaving a couple of coins for the waitresses, he left. Maybe tomorrow would be the day.
