occupation Florist, Mail-order husband
Stealing another worried glance at the calendar, I groaned audibly and massaged my pulsing temples. I was a week away from my thirty-eighth birthday, growing older by the second, with nothing worthwhile to show for it. What were you thinking, Stan, hanging the calendar next to the clock? Two ever-present side-by-side reminders of the forward-marching passage of time...
Day in, day out, I watched blissfully happy couples (or their insensitive yet still painfully content friends and families) prance around the shop buying larger-than-life bouquets to celebrate an engagement, a new baby, or closing the deal on their first home.
For the past eight years, on March 14th, Brad buys two dozen blood red roses to celebrate his long-term commitment to his partner John. For the past five years, I've thought of closing shop on this particular day just to avoid seeing his sickly sweet smile as he tells me about their promotions at work or the remodeling of their kitchen at home, while I fight my inner turmoil and return a pleasant grin asking him, again, to please sign on the dotted line so I can shoo him out.
"Happy seventh anniversary! Here's to hoping for another seven. No, seventy," I say, fake smile plastered on my face. And he sighs, thanks me sincerely and slips out the door.
I always shut down shop as soon as he turns the corner, regardless of the time...
Shaking myself out of the daydream, I realized I had plucked the petals off a handful of innocent daisies.
"Marie," I said, calling to my only employee, "what say we shut down early today?" She beamed, throwing off her apron and flying through the door before she gave her opinion.
"See you tomorrow, then," I called after her...
---
"Man, I don't know why you can't find a nice guy to be with," Zach said slurping his coffee, his new boy-toy dangling from his arm. "I mean, you own your own business, you're a nice guy, not terrible looking..."
"Maybe it's the toupee," said the boyfriend.
"I don't wear a toupee," I grumbled, reaching for my hair.
"Right," commented Zach.
"If you're that lonely, why don't you take out a personals?"
"Tried it," replied Zach and I, in unison.
"Hm, you could always pay someone to date you? Mail-order boyfriend or something?"
I threw the money down on the table and headed for the door.
"Oh, he was only kidding, Stan," I could hear Zach calling. I glanced back only to find they were already too engaged in a kiss to be concerned any more with my bitter departure...
---
He was beautiful. Waiting at the airport with only a carry-on, it was clear the pictures did not do him justice. I reached out my hand, offering to take his bag, and received a firm handshake instead.
"English," he said in a thick, Russian accent. His name.
"Stan. It's nice to finally meet you."
He stared, then nodded and followed me to the car.
I found him on a website for mail-order brides. He was the singular listed male, though built just so that he could pass easily for either gender.
Watching ten minutes of pre-recorded video, I fell in love. Replaying the video over and over just to hear his laugh, see his smile, the glimmer in his forest green eyes, I knew he was the one.
As I stole side glances at him in the car on the way back to our apartment, he looked much younger than twenty, though I held a birth certificate to confirm. He did not speak in the car, only stared longingly out the window. I wondered if this had all been a mistake.
Yet for weeks after, he seemed more than content as he made arrangements in the flower store. His were more unique and more beautiful than I could manage, even with years of schooling and practice. Loyal customers were eager to pay the increased rates for his much-improved work. He whispered to the flower in his foreign tongue, though he still would not utter a word to me. I saw his smile only when he brought me another bouquet, seeking my approval.
Still, after the shop closed for the day, after dinner was cooked then dishes washed and put away, after day clothes were exchanged for night, he would fall asleep in bed beside me and allow me to kiss his soft, gentle lips and I could feel a thunderous burning deep in my chest. This, I reasoned, must be happiness.
notes;;
--English has spoken only one word (his name) since his arrival to the United States
--English is fluent in the English language, a fact that is not known to anyone
--Though Stanley believes English is twenty (and has a birth certificate stating such), English is actually sixteen
--Stanley refers to English as his employee. No one knows English is a mail-order boyfriend, as English is not affectionate toward Stanley, save when he allows himself to be kissed by Stanley at night. Stanley is embarrassed of this fact.
--Stanley and English have never been more intimate than kissing.
--Stanley does not regret bringing English to America; English does not wish to return to Russia.
