Though it's unknown what exactly Somnolent is, he seems to have some qualities similar to a deity. He never speaks or seems to display any emotion during the day, but at night, he takes control of a few people's dreams to communicate with them. He can do this by possessing a sleeping person and controlling part of his or her thoughts. Very few have seen him in the flesh, but he has appeared in people's dreams in his true form.
Although Somno has such power, he rarely if ever uses them to deliberately harm anyone. He feels a sort of fatherly love for humans and does all that he can to protect them; dreams are one way for him to display warnings as well as other things he feels are necessary to bring to their attention. Speaking with them in the real world wouldn't have nearly as much as an effect on them as their dreams, and Somno is still learning how to communicate through speech.
