The cave was pitch black, except for the light from the entrance. A brown.. creature sat facing a wall, red claws scraping thoughtfully against the stone. A little flash of light emanated from under her fingered paw and after some moments of silence the rock and dirt under her hand seemed to begin to shift. Slowly a subtle glow shone from the wall as the creature drew a red mineral into view.. and lightly placed it in a very wide, toothy mouth that didn't seem to be there before.
She shifted slightly before turning her long head and neck to gaze at the sunlight shining from the entrance...
Long ago, when I was not much more than an adolescent, my family and the other occupants of our town was set upon by a massive storm. It was unlike anything anyone had ever seen before - lightning that seemed to flare red at random intervals, rain that hurt with even the weakest falling pressure...
The storm came quickly and left quickly, but the devastation it left behind it tore families to shreds. Mine had gotten off easily. We were a poor family in the first place, so there was little change in our daily routines.
I had been effected worst by the unnatural event.. I could no longer eat the food my family managed to scrounge up. I would cough it up after an hour or so. They could not feed me, and I was young enough to be headstrong, so there were times I would wander off by myself to search for nourishment. Starving and dying, I was drawn to a cave on the outskirts of our living society.. I figured it was because I needed a place to die, but I was wrong. I settled just inside the entrance and tried to sleep. All I could think about was how hungry I was. Suddenly I realized that the cave around me was glowing.. not strongly, but subtly, and in small pockets, like the earth was trying to push little areas up to the surface.
That wasn't far from the truth. Dirt slowly began to be displaced as something pushed up and into the air. The glowing grew stronger, and it was soon clear that it emanated from the large red minerals that had found their way - before my eyes - to the surface.
The mineral - phosphorous, though I did not know it at the time - had the most tantalizing smell I'd ever come into contact with. Driven by starvation and my senses, I tried to eat the rock.. and soon I discovered that it was satisfying my hunger. Soon I found Christer, or he found me - and he has stuck around, proven to be a necessary help to find spots of phosphorous. He doesn't seem to mind helping me out, either.
Nobody really knows what the storm really did. Most came off easy.. they got sick for a short time, but were soon healthy again. A handful of us never fully recovered, and now we have to nourish ourselves with various minerals and rock found in the earth and nature.
We aren't looked upon as monsters, no.. at least not by those we live near, those we know as friends and family. We are victims of nature. A few of us who live nearby have decided to wear objects that will connect us by sight, and we have everyone we know spread the idea around.
I wear my mask and ribbon as my symbol, my favorite shard of dull phosphorous as the center piece. We haven't found any others, but I'm sure they're out there...
