If there was ever the phrase helpless romantic in the dictionary, certainly the name Samantha Jane Chartreuse would be next to it. It wasn't simply because she fell for every boy she met (she did) or that she could make any boy fall for her (and it usually worked) but more so that she spent too much time looking for Mr. Right. If she could have one ambition in life... well, that would be an easy enough answer. "To find the person that loves me most," would be her honest reply.

But the question remains of how to be happy with one man when constantly looking at another and thinking, Is that him? Is he the one I've been waiting for? She thus finds it near impossible to be entirely content with one man and only one man. It's not that she finds herself in the arms of many when she's dating one in specific, but only that she finds herself wishing she was. In all actuality, there's a high possibility she knows nothing of love or what it means to truly be in love. All she knows is she wants a fairytale romance and to be swept off her feet onto a waiting white horse.

As a baby, Samantha was precocious, especially in anything involving books and the English language. She enjoyed her Disney princess stories, especially the one involving a beautiful princess kissed awake by her husband-to-be. Another among her favorites involved a young woman treated like a slave, only to be brought to her prince charming through a fairy godmother. When Samantha was little, she often wished she had her own fairy godmother, asking her mother and father constantly how to make her appear.

"It's only a story, Sammy," her mother would say with a smile and a kiss to her forehead. "Those kinds of tales aren't real."

"Yes, mother," Samantha would softly answer, her heart not at all in it for as far as she was concerned, she would wait patiently on her fairy godmother to come save the day. And all the way from ages five to eighteen she kept on hoping -- no longer for a fairy godmother but instead only for her prince charming. There were, of course, multiple times she'd thought she'd found him, from her 4th grade crush on Jimmy Lions to her high school senior boyfriend, Matthew Ogata. But they all turned out to be frogs, and Samantha found herself growing more and more weary of kissing more and more frogs and getting nowhere.

And all of that remained up until age nineteen, when a new man appeared into her life. Her father had recently reconnected with an old high school friend and had planned a Sunday morning brunch, and his friend brought along his wife and son, and thus Henry Julian Anderson entered her life. She remembered having just woke up, still in her striped pajama bottoms and baggy white t-shirt, hair tangled and teeth not brushed. She'd only just glanced down the hall and spotted him, but, like all others, she couldn't seem to pry her eyes off him.

It might've been his blue eyes, the blonde hair, or the way he smiled at her, but all she knew was she wanted him. At twenty-two -- and thus four years her senior -- he was studying up on becoming a pediatrician. He would make such a wonderful husband, a wonderful father, a wonderful... man. Samantha knew, from the moment he'd flashed his pearly whites, she was going to fall, and fall hard. But that didn't bother her -- she adored the feeling of falling in love, the way it made her heart race and head spin, made her body tingle when she thought of that special someone. However, there was something she didn't take into consideration, and that was that Henry might already have found the love of his life.

It was only be coincidence that she even found out. His phone beeped with a notification one night when he came over with his family for dinner. She didn't even have to see him answer it to know that it was someone important to him. His eyes lit up upon seeing his phone flash, the number obviously quite familiar to him. He talked about her a moment later to them, saying she was a tall, pretty brunette with plans of being a history major. Samantha couldn't seem to eat much that night and mostly picked at her meatloaf. Henry, though he had long since put his phone away, by the end of dinner was in a noticeably better mood than prior to answering the message.

For what felt like once in her life, the person she was aiming for didn't desire her the same way. She flirted, flashed her dolled up eyes, pouty lips, wore her cutest clothes and attempted to even hold his hand once, but all of it in vain. He'd look away from her face, shift away from her hand, step to the side. The feeling was new, scary, and foreign to Samantha who was far too accustomed to getting men at the snap of her fingers.

In every persons life, there comes a moment where a choice has to be made, one that will change the life of someone, whether in a good way or bad. Samantha found this moment when she happened to be at the park one day, sitting with a group of friends when one said, "Isn't that boy handsome? Too bad he's with a girl." It only took a moments notice for Samantha to recognize Henry, his hand on the waist of a slim blonde that was kissing at his neck.

Now wait a minute, Samantha caught herself thinking, Henry said he was dating a tall brunette, while this woman here was clearly of average height and a blonde. It wasn't until she saw him lean down and kiss her that it connected that he was cheating. Perhaps it was because she idolized him, thought he'd be perfect for her, that it broke her heart despite him never having been hers to begin with. It stung more than she expected, but what she found hurt most was that her expectation of people had dwindled. She had thought he'd be perfect, more so than any of the others. He was sweet and handsome, wanted a family and wanted to work with kids, and yet she found he was just as human as everyone else.

There was a moment of sadness in her, the moment where she realized she'd been waiting all her life for a moment that, realistically, had little chance of ever happening. There would be no prince charming for her, for nobody was perfect, and no one man was going to rescue her on his white steed. She had thought that Henry would be the ultimate man, even if he wasn't hers. Never before could Samantha recall having thought she'd found 'Mr. Right' who turned out to be bouncing around. There might have been cases she didn't know about, but to have it so clearly and upfront in her face was almost shocking.

As her friends talked and stared at the oh-so-attractive couple, Samantha sighed quietly, knowing it might be time to finally put her fairytale dreams aside in hopes of finding a real, genuine man, who may not be her prince charming but close enough; after all, all she really needed was someone who loved her most.
