Will you gamble with me to win all the stars in the universe?

here was once a Jollin couple who had long in vain wished for a child. They had a little window in the back of their house on top of the hill, from which a splendid view of the night sky could be seen. On a cloudless night, hundreds and thousands of glowing stars twinkled above, and the ones on the west side were especially beautiful and bright compared to the rest. Those stars belonged to an enchantress, who had great power and was dreaded by all those in Subeta.

One day, the female Jollin stood by the window and looked up to the sky. When she saw the stars hang high above, she longed for them and had the greatest desire to possess one. Her desire increased every day, and when she realized she could not get any, the female Jollin began to look pale and miserable. Her husband became alarmed and asked, “What ails you, dear wife?” And she replied, “If I can’t have a star from the sky, I will die.” So the husband, who loved her very much, went out to the edge of the hill. He called out to the enchantress and begged for a star from the sky. The enchantress appeared at once, amused by such an absurd request, and said to the male Jollin, “I will give you a star only on one condition; you must give me the child which your wife will bring into the world.” Desperately wanting to save his wife, the male Jollin agreed. And when his wife gave birth to a beautiful daughter, the enchantress appeared once more and took the child away. She named the girl, Erina.

Erina lived in an incredibly tall tower in a remote area between Shadownglen and the sea. The tower had no doors, only windows. Erina grew into a beautiful Jollin under the moonlight; her silky fur was a dark navy color dappled with blue sparkles, and her long fluffy tail resembled the color of the sky on a cloudless summer day. As beautiful as Erina was, she had an unquenchable thirst for gambling. Every night, she would sit by the window with her golden dice, waiting for her forest friends to show up. And when they arrived, they would stand at the base of the tower and cry, “Erina, Erina, let down your beautiful tail.” At that moment, Erina would unfasten her long braided tail and let her friends climb up on it. They would gamble all night long for all sorts of prizes like Pete’s grommet food, cash shop items, and wizard tokens. Though Erina did not win every single time, she was still very good at it. And soon, her towers were filled with mountains of her winnings.

One night, a Jollin prince from north of Shadowglen passed by Erina’s tower by chance, and he saw Erina standing by the window, playing with her golden dice. The dice was so beautiful and delicate that he stood still and watched it. The prince wanted to climb up to take a better look so he searched around for the door to the tower. When he found none, he went home. But enslaved by his greed, the prince went out into the forest everyday in the hopes of obtaining those unique dice.

After nights of spying from behind a tree, he saw two Pherrets go to the base of the tower and cry “Erina, Erina, let down your tail.” Erina let down the braids of her tail and the Pherrets climbed up to her. “If that is the ladder by which one mounts, I too will try my fortune,” said the prince. So the next day when the sky began to grow dark, the prince went to the tower and cried, “Erina, Erina, let down your tail!” Immediately, the tail fell down and the prince climbed up.

Needless to say, Erina was shocked to find a stranger standing before her eyes. At first she was frightened but her curiosity soon overshadowed her fear. The prince told her, his heart had been so stirred by her beautiful dice that it gave him no rest, so he was forced to see her. If she would let him have it, he promised to help her escape the tower and make her his queen.

“Well, why would I want that?” Erina raised an eyebrow.

“Then what else do you want, my fair lady?” The prince asked.

Erina told the Prince about the enchantress, how skillful the enchantress was at gambling, and how she has longed to win and to possess those stars in the sky for herself. “If you help me win all the stars, I will give you my dice and everything else in this room.” She pointed to the mountains of treasure behind her.

The prince’s glaze followed Erina’s finger and his jaw dropped instantly. There were more than enough treasures to buy him an entire kingdom! Right there and then, his heart was set to help this young girl. “I will bring you something tomorrow, and when you claim all the stars, I will come once again.” The prince said to her.

So the next night, the prince came like he said he would. He brought with him a Tohemn. The prince told Erina it would bring her great luck in her games. And with that, he bid his farewell and disappeared into the dark forest.

The very same night, Erina hid the Tohemn in her long fluffy tail, and called out to the enchantress for a game of subeta blackjack. She challenged her for all the stars in the western sky. Overly confident in her own skills, the enchantress mocked Erina’s naivety, and took the challenge without hesitation. However, to her utter shock and surprise, Erina won the game before dawn, and hence all of the stars. Enraged and humiliated, the enchantress stormed out of the tower, and the stars began to fall. Thousands of them slowly made their way through the window in clusters of sparkles and glows. Before Erina had time to react, they dissolved into her tail hair, turning her entire tail from azure blue to shiny gold. Within seconds, her room was light up like a midsummer’s day. Ecstatic beyond words, Erina celebrated her victory for the rest of the day.

When the next night arrived, Erina discovered a problem; the sky was so dark without the stars that her forest friends could no longer find her tower. And the prince, who had promised to return, got lost in the dark forest and in his desperate attempt to return home, he fell into the marsh and was never to be found again. Frustrated without her friends and her gambling, Erina sat in her tower and searched for a solution for days until she finally found it. She gave each one of her friends a lock of her golden hair so they could use it as a lamp to guide them to her tower in the dark. From that day forth, when looking down upon the South of Shadowglen at night, you can always see a sea of scattered lights, glowing among the wood, like the western stars, still glowing after falling from the sky.
