Bzzzt, bzzz, crash, zzzzt.
A mechanical insect flew aimlessly about the room. Sputtering smoke and erupting with sudden noises. This ancient being loomed disturbingly as each crash and bang echoed throughout the empty abode. It came to a halt landing on a formidable light moulded to resemble the globe.
Tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap.
Booming echoes of the creatures wings hitting the glass filled the room.
Clink clink clink...
A single delicately crafted nut fell to the ground, it didn't care. It's movements remained the same, gliding effortlessly through the air. Elegantly it travelled, unaware of it's age. It knew it needed to fly, it need not know why, but that was it's purpose.
Clouds of billowing smoke expelled from the exhausts.
No one cared. The creature lived but to them it was lifeless. It had a soul but it was heartless.
She was a person once.

The mansion had seen better days, nay had seen better years, had once been the go-to spot for all the rich folks around the city. Those who were eager to see just what gadgets had been created by the renowned Dr. Alejandro. They say the parties his wife Prueba threw were legendary and anyone with a pulse would do anything to get invited. You were considered a nobody until you experienced your first party at that mansion, it was almost like a rite of passage. Ah that had been so long ago, now all that was left of the grand building was falling apart.
From the outside it looks as if nothing can be saved but if you're brave enough to push past the dust and cobwebs, risk the falling roof and support beams, venture beyond the front door and uneven hall you will be treated to a sight that you won't believe you are seeing. For the mansion may be crumbling but deep within its decaying walls still remains the most grand of ballrooms, kept clean and maintained all these years by a mysterious creature, no one has actually seen, therefore it's believed to be nothing more than an urban legend at this point.
Oh but she was real, airing more on the side of caution than anything else right now. No she did not feel the ballroom was worthy of receiving visitors just yet, it was still a mess. Prueba had much more work to do, after all she couldn't very well go against her beloved husband's wishes could she? He may be long gone right now but that doesn't mean he won't be coming back and she must keep this place looking presentable and ready for guests. When he comes back he will praise her and she longs for that day when they are reunited.
Prueba's mechanical little shell of a body was now starting to show its age, rust forming around her joints, the metal no longer glittering and gold. Not to mention she was slower than she had ever been, yet that never seemed to stop her from doing her work around the ballroom, making sure everything was perfect. She could not fail her husband, after all the hard work he had done throughout his life the least she could do was be a good hostess and keep his memory from fading into obscurity. That is why she continues, even as her body breaks down, she will keep at it until the very end.
No dust or debris will find its way onto the marble floor, she made sure of that by doing long careful sweeps every morning. The tables held all the best silverware which she polished to a high shine every other day. She even braved the outside world to gather flowers from the gardens to replenish the vases along the walls and always replaced the candles that were strategically placed to give the room a sense of ambiance and grace. The only thing she did not put out was food, only because the ballroom wasn't finished yet. Someday just not today.
When night came she would do her final sweep of the room and venture through the ruins of her home to make it back to the personal chambers she had shared with her husband, which felt like a lifetime ago. She would rest upon the old dust covered dresser and power down for the evening and there she was greeted by memories of the better days, of the lavish parties she once hosted and the wondrous images of her beloved. By the time the sun broke from the horizon Prueba was up and doing her chores and practicing her little speeches as she worked.
Would today be the day she could finally open the front door and allow the public in? It was close, so close, yet something was missing that she just couldn't quite figure out. No matter, when the time was right she'd know. For now she merely cleaned the floor and polished the silverware, entranced by memories and the never dying belief that it would all real once more.
