There's always a side effect.
They thought I was the cure.
I'm only the disease.
Sickly girl with a poor immune system is the only survivor of a disease that wiped out her entire town and is quickly spreading throughout the nation. She's brought in to test on, hoping they can make a cure (and vaccine) from her. All they succeed in doing is infecting more and more people with the disease.
She's a carrier, and can only transfer the disease: not cure it.
I was always a sick child.
I was born with an immune deficiency, and my body attacked its own immune system, rendering me vulnerable to most everything. My life was spent in and out of hospitals, though I don't remember most of it with all the drugs they kept me pumped full of.
I remember, recently, being told that all my worries were over. I had miraculously not fallen ill to the recent pandemic that was rapidly taking lives, so the doctors had high hopes for me. They wanted to test my endurance with a special serum they had derived to defeat the bacteria that was spreading.
I went under and felt nothing.
When I awoke, I was cold, alone, and hungry.
My heart beat was steady, my breathing normal. Everything was fine - except it wasn't.
I was too achy. Too cold. Too hungry.
I was so disoriented and dazed that I couldn't focus. Colors and images melted and swam among themselves. It was dizzying.
I can't remember how I got out. It's such a blur.
I remember running. Running faster than I thought I could. The need for air burning my lungs and pushing me onward.
I vaguely recall a sign: You are now leaving Iowa.
Iowa... it must be what my name is. They knew I was leaving and I can't remember anything else.
I guess the doctors will never know if that serum worked out. They'll never know for sure if I even survived.
For the first time in my life I'm outside by myself and it feels amazing.
I'm just so hungry.
Extra:
You know those times when you go to give blood and they test you for all sorts of diseases and if you come up as positive for any of them, they inform you?
If you tested positive for what I have, they'd kill you.
