Sugar and spice and everything

was lettered on the hot pink tacky heart-shaped, unopened box in bright, glittery pink cursive.
Above it, in a not very inconspicuous corner read the words
LIMITED EDITION
bolded and intense gold in colour -- the kind that made you shield your eyes.
Behind a sheet of clear(ish) plastic -- covering the great big heart-shaped hole, centered, to showcase what was inside -- was the legendary stuffed animal.
Children squeal at its presents and adults dazed into a trance of nostalgia.
Indeed, it was

Pinky-bear Nag-a-Lot!
It Speaks! It Laughs! It's Cuddly!

"Daddy, daddy! I want that one!" the little girl in braids with the warm chocolate brown eyes exclaimed, mushing her nose against the display case, leaving a great big smudge. A large smile lit up her face.
Nag-a-Lot couldn't help the but let the hope flutter in his chest.
"Sorry. Display only." the scrawny man with squinty eyes as pellucid water snapped, quickly taking out a crimson silk cloth and wiping away the snotty smudge.
And yet again, all Nag-a-Lot's hope was crushed just like that, If only he could mimic the girl's tear-filled eyes and pained expression which perfectly emulated the sorrow he felt. But Nag-a-lot couldn't. Nag-a-Lot was only a stuffed toy.

Yet being a stuffed toy branded with the title Limited Edition did not make Nag-a-Lot a stuffed toy. It made Nag-a-Lot subject to imprisonment. Nag was a 'display-only' -- a see no touch, as though he was a leper in exile. Day in and day out, Nag-a-Lot watched all the other stuffed toys, dolls and action figures come and go from behind the glass palisade. He watched how they were held so tenderly by the dainty hands of the tiny humans. A reminder that Nag was a display-only. He envied them, wishing that one day, a he could bring a child such joy. After all, that is what stuffed toys were made for!

The child was right on schedule. She'd come to Biggin and Co.'s Toy Works with her Dad every Saturday to check whether the pink bear in the display case was finally up for sale, and as usual, the bald old man would scowl at the pair and say -- "Sorry. Display only." Usually.

Today, when she walked into the store she was greeted by the usual twinkling bells at the door and the scent of some cheap air freshener... Yet something felt different... Perhaps, today, her wish might come true?

WIP!
