Aylen Lavellan || Compassionate for a murderer and highly sarcastic. Greatly cares about his companions.

Possible Dragon Age Inquisition spoilers ahead, as well as my personal head cannons.

Outfit references. Yes this is a female character, but it's the same on males (just minus boobs.) Credit for these goes to lionofskyhold on tumblr.
Middle boots Left outfit.
Notes: Ignore the really bright red of his lips on the last two. I messed it up then couldn't fix my issue. He has a total of two facial scars: One through his right eyebrow, then the 'broken' one on his chin. Also I have no idea why there's a ton of white on the edges of these images. :c Sowwie. oh and his eyes are gray. c: They're hard to see.

Elf
Ice/Rift Mage Archer - I don't care that you can only be one or the other in the game. In my mind if you're part of a group of people that is strongly discriminated against you wouldn't want to add to that by openly being a mage; especially since Templars are likely to spirit you away to a Circle if you show magical ability, taking you away from your people. Therefore my character carries a bow, and lies about being a mage until its absolutely necessary. Because of all this he's more skilled with a bow, and ends up getting help from the mages recruited by the Inquisition.

Another 'I don't care about game cannon' - He's left handed. In the game the Inquisitor is right handed but I really don't understand how in a time of duress he reaches down with his left hand to grab something. And I like left handed characters because I'm a leftie and it makes it easier for me to imagine things. SO DEAL WITH IIIIIT.

Grew up as a Sabrae (clan in Dragon Age 2 that's outside of Kirkwall) and not a Lavellan. His father was of clan Lavellan, but he went back North with his clan after his son was born. Aylen and his mother stayed on Sundermount. When he was young his mother took them into the city and they stayed with one of her friends in the Alienage. During this time several Tevinter Magisters were there visiting the city for an extended period of time. She fell in love with one of these Magisters, and Aylen befriended one of the teenagers that tagged along with his Magister father. A few months into their friendship they were discussing magic and Aylen froze a nearby puddle with his, getting noticed by a Templar. His mother got to him before the Templars could, and she and Aylen convinced the Magister who was now her lover to take them across the sea to Wycome. From there she delivered Aylen to his father and his clan, Lavellan before selling herself to the Tevinter Magister, leaving for his country and working as a servant. She would send valuables and coin to her son when she could.

It was here in clan Lavellan that he met his best friend, an elf named Bryn. The pair were inseparable, and became hunting partners. She was not born with magical abilities, but always supported Aylen's and often asked him to show her different tricks. Throughout the years Aylen sold and traded most of what his mother sent him. His father had died two years after his arrival of sickness, and his mother continued to support him from Tevinter until her own death when he was 16. She had been discovered as a mistress by the Magister's wife and, not wanting anyone to hear about how he chose an elf over her, she used her as a sacrifice in a blood magic ritual. The Magister sent a letter of apology to Aylen, as well as all belongings she had in her possession, including a ring that Aylen strung on a chain and wore around his neck until the day he gave it to his lover in Inquisition, Dorian.

His life was pretty simple in the clan. He caught the eye of the Keeper's son, but it was mostly physical as Aylen explained he wasn't interested in a relationship. He was usually chosen to go to Wycome to trade and ended up becoming friends with a dwarven baker in town. Bryn befriended the daughter of a healer and the four of them wandered the woods together for a time. Bryn, because of her beauty and snarky tongue, caught the attention of some ex-Templars in the area. When she refused their advances, instead choosing the healer's daughter Caitlin. Later one of them, in a drunken rage, nearly killed Bryn. Aylen delivered the killing blow, a mercy killing upon her request.

Caitlin blamed him for her death, and he stopped coming to town to avoid her. A few months later he and the Keeper's son spent a night together. Angry and jealous that Aylen refused to have a romantic relationship with him, he attacked Aylen in a fit of rage. When Aylen defended himself he drew a knife, badly wounding the mage. He fought back, though, and ended up blinding the other in his dominant eye. The ice mage managed to make it to Caitlin's small cottage at the edge of the woods where she used techniques she'd learned from her parents to help nurse him back to health with the help of Anda. Once he was healthy enough to stand trial he was banished, but given a few months to continue his recovery. During this time he taught Caitlin what he knew about Dalish healing, as well taught her the art of archery. He and Caitlin later left together, ending up in Kirkwall where they joined a group of people defending refugees from slavers and bandits. Fenris is included in this group. They are all aware that he is a mage after an incident where their leader's half elf-half human daughter was found by slavers and he used magic to defend her. The company calls him Dalish, except Fenris who insists on calling him Aylen. He doesn't mind either way, though it seems to irk the other elf as it comes from a place of racism towards the Dalish elves, though the company doesn't use it as such and uses it more as a term of endearment. Once he left for the Temple of Sacred Ashes, Caitlin decided to stay behind with the company, and Aylen gave her his bow, claiming he wouldn't need it where he was going as going to the Conclave was considered by many to be suicide for a Dalish mage.

Age about 20 at the start. He wasn't 'sent' to the Temple of Sacred Ashes because he wanted to go. He was banished from the clan for maiming the Keeper's son (it was self-defense but he can't prove it) but was sent on a mission to spy on the Conclave with the promise that if he survived and did well that his banishment would be reconsidered.

After the Inquisition he returns to the Kirkwall company when Dorian, his lover, chooses to leave for Tevinter. Annoyed by his fame and assassination attempts, he stays for a year before he returns to the Inquisition at age 25, not only as its leader, but taking over for the string of useless spymasters they attempted to hire after Leliana became Divine.
