once upon a time

Sophie Nicole Lane was destined to be a model from birth--at least, that's what her mother hoped. Sophie was born to amateur model Erica Trundle and photographer Michael Lane. Upon learning that his mistress was pregnant, Michael promptly left. Erica was forced to quit modeling at age twenty-two in order to care for her young daughter. She dreamed that someday Sophie would follow in her footsteps and make a life in front of the camera.

As a child, Sophie had few friends. She constantly missed school for auditions to appear in children's clothing ads or family magazines. With each rejection, her mother became more and more persistent. Sophie, on the other hand, simply grew more aggravated; she would have much rather been out playing kickball or collecting ladybugs. A tomboy at heart, her personal tastes often clashed with the frilly ensembles that she was forced into. She never said anything, though, because she knew her cooperation made Erica happy.

By age twelve, Sophie was ready to explode. The years of silent suffering had built up a wall of words-never-said that always lingered on her tongue, but never made it past her lips. The habit of refraining from speaking her true feelings spanned past modeling into the rest of her life. She had one or two close friends, although she hardly trusted them to keep all of her confessions a secret. The many rejections she faced as a kid had followed her, training her to fear judgment of any kind. To combat this, she put up a tough girl facade. She acted like it didn't bother her when her classmates called her Skeleton--her mother controlled everything that went in and out of her mouth to assure that she didn't gain any extra weight. ( "Sweetie, models have to be able to fit in the clothes." ) She began to pick on the others, sometimes even getting into fist fights. Eventually, most of the kids learned to leave her alone.

Sophie turned to music to fill the empty gap in her life. She went from audition to audition, tuning out everything but the melody blasting from her headphones. Her collection of songs gradually blossomed into an extensive collection that included everything from rock to country to techno to rap. She began to hate the sugar-coated, bubbly mainstream pop that seemed to ooze from every radio, and her verbal assaults shifted to those who listened to the "garbage." Music became a very touchy subject. She considered her knowledge far superior to that of anyone else, but on the rare occasion when someone transcended to her level, they won her elusive respect.

Although Erica had lost all hope of her daughter ever becoming a famous model by the Sophie graduated from high school, Sophie began to book her own auditions. The battle of beauty had become a staple in her life. The catty looks, suffocating makeup and nonexistent diet made her sick, but she didn't know how to function without them. She also picked up a waitress job on the side in order to care for her younger sister, Natalia. As far as romance went, her love life remained fairly inactive, although the same couldn't be said for her lust life. The human form fascinated Sophie. The feeling of a warm body next to hers, of such raw desire, drove her crazy. She found a sort of comfort in the fact that while not all of the modeling agencies wanted her flawed, imperfect self, someone else did.
