Words

It's the impurities that make a gem beautiful.
Aquamarine is a beautiful stone. It's beauty is only contested by you, my dear. The way that it shimmers against your skin, the way it lays upon your dark hair, the way it looks upon your fingers. These gemstones I give to you, my darling, cannot match my love for you. It is simply a physical attempt to show you how much my heart belongs to you.

I'm in the gem trade. I have been for most of my adult life, but don't think much about that... Anyone can be good in this "field". The name of the game is to make people happy, to point out how lovely they look when they're wearing rocks. My job is to take minerals that have been tainted with ions of various elements and sell the hell out of them.

but.... I do have a soft spot for one type of gemstone. Aquamarine. It's a type of Beryl with iron. Most people know it when it's green, an emerald, which is considered one of the original four precious stones. But see, Aquamarine is so much more special. It shines like the clearest of water and is more brilliant than the sky. It is the purest thing on this earth.

I'm not talking about your drug store type of aquamarine. That's garbage. What you want is this: a darker hue, intense, non temperature heated, cut perfectly. When you look into it you're looking into your soul. You're memorized by it's beauty, you're captivated by it's ability to pull you in, to keep you staring into the depths of color looking for the meaning of life, you find yourself wondering if there is anything more amazing in this world than the stone you hold in your hand, which took hundreds of years to form.

When I was a child I held such a stone. It was dubbed 'Stone of the Lake'. The legend was that a fisherman had caught a giant catfish and inside of it's mouth was the stone. It had been hoarded away by a family for many generations before it was finally sold onto the market. My father had bought it.

And then he left. With the stone. Vanished. I had known there was another woman in his life, but I never really understood what made her more important than two people. She must have been amazing for him to forget about his son and wife. I've never really forgave him, but I never was very angry at him.

But I do want to find him.
I want it. I want the Stone of the Lake.
